AUXERRE, France (Interstat) — Auxerre hosts Angers on Sunday in a Ligue 1 match at Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps, with both sides aiming to establish early-season footing in Week 2 of the French top flight.

The fixture pits two clubs with contrasting recent fortunes. Auxerre enters on a high after a 4-1 thrashing of Lille on April 26, a result that snapped a four-match winless run. Angers, meanwhile, settled for a 0-0 draw at home against Nantes the same day, extending its unbeaten streak to two matches after a 1-1 draw with Le Havre on April 18.

Head-to-head, Angers holds the edge. The teams last met Nov. 9, 2025, when Angers won 2-0 at Auxerre. That result is part of a broader pattern: Angers has taken points from four of its past five matches against Auxerre, though both sides have shown inconsistency.

Auxerre’s recent form has been erratic. After a 5-0 win over UNFP on April 4, the team lost 4-2 at Dijon on March 28, then bounced back with a 3-0 victory at Brest on March 21. However, draws with Monaco (2-2) and Moulins Yzeure Foot (2-2) in April highlighted defensive lapses. Auxerre’s attack, led by its 4-1 outburst at Lille, appears potent but lacks stability.

Angers has struggled to score, netting only three goals in its past six matches. The team’s defense has been slightly more reliable, with three clean sheets in that span, including the scoreless draw against Nantes. But a 5-1 loss at Lens on March 20 exposed vulnerabilities on the road.

Projections offer a mixed outlook. Interstat’s game simulator forecasts a 1-1 draw, while the same outlet’s ELO system gives Auxerre a 75.30% probability of victory. The discrepancy reflects Auxerre’s statistical advantage at home against an Angers side that has lost three of its past five away league matches.

Both teams face demanding schedules ahead. Auxerre next hosts Nice on May 10 before traveling to Lille on May 17. Angers visits Strasbourg on May 10 and travels to Brest on May 17. Sunday’s result could provide early momentum or set a tone of struggle.

Kickoff is at 3 p.m. local time.
