MONTERREY, Mexico (Interstat) — Tigres UANL U20 opens its MEX: U20 League season Saturday against Cruz Azul U20, seeking to bounce back from a loss that closed its previous campaign.

The match kicks off at Estadio Universitario at 7 p.m. local time. Week 1 of the U20 League marks the start of a new season after a two-year gap in official competition for both sides.

Tigres enters the match following a 2-1 defeat at Mexiquense U20 on May 7, 2023. The loss ended a run of inconsistent form for the Monterrey-based club. Cruz Azul, meanwhile, won its most recent match, beating Santos Laguna U20 2-1 on April 29, 2023. That victory provided momentum heading into the extended offseason.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 1-1 draw. However, the analytics firm’s ELO system favors Tigres, giving the home side a 63.9 percent probability of winning.

Tigres UANL finished the 2022-23 season with a mixed record at home, struggling to find consistency in attack. The team’s defense also conceded late goals in several matches. Cruz Azul showed resilience in its final match, rallying from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Santos Laguna.

Both clubs feature young talent aiming to break into senior squads. Tigres’ U20 side has traditionally emphasized possession-based play, while Cruz Azul relies on counterattacking speed.

Saturday’s game represents an opportunity for both teams to establish early-season momentum in a league that often sees wide-open competition in the opening weeks.

Cruz Azul’s victory over Santos Laguna was its second in three matches to close the previous season. Tigres, conversely, lost two of its final three games.

Kickoff weather is forecast to be clear, with temperatures in the low 70s Fahrenheit.

The U20 League serves as the primary development circuit for Mexican professional clubs, with players typically aged 16 to 20. Matches are often used by senior team coaches to evaluate prospects for first-team call-ups.

Tigres has not announced any lineup changes or injuries. Cruz Azul’s roster is expected to include several players who featured in the win over Santos Laguna.

The match will be streamed live via the league’s official platform.
