Břidličná vs Šumperk

TRAPANI, Italy (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame projections, TJ Břidličná and Šumperk played to a 1-1 draw Saturday in a Czech Cup of Cups match held at the neutral Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale.

The match, part of the early group stage of the domestic cup competition, saw both Czech sides settle for a point after an exchange of first-half goals. The outcome continued challenging starts to the season for each club.

Šumperk opened the scoring in the 20th minute through forward Giacomo Beretta. The visiting side’s early advantage held for more than 20 minutes, but TJ Břidličná found an equalizer just before halftime. Striker Luigi Canotto netted in the 43rd minute to send the teams into the break level.

The second half failed to produce a winner, with both sides unable to break the deadlock. The final whistle confirmed a share of the points, a result that contrasted sharply with statistical forecasts. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a narrow 1-0 victory for Šumperk, while its ELO rating system heavily favored TJ Břidličná, giving the side a 74.80 percent probability to win.

The draw leaves both teams seeking their first victory within the Cup of Cups this season. Šumperk’s record in the competition now stands at one win, one loss and one draw for four points. TJ Břidličná remains winless, with two losses and one draw for one point.

Form across all competitions mirrors their cup struggles. Šumperk holds an identical overall record of one win, one loss and one draw. TJ Břidličná’s season tally sits at zero wins, two losses and one draw.

Each club entered the contest following heavy defeats in late July. Šumperk fell 2-1 to Zábřeh on July 27, while TJ Břidličná suffered a 6-2 loss to Uničov on the same date.

The decision to host the Czech domestic cup fixture in Trapani, on the Italian island of Sicily, provided an unusual backdrop. The Stadio Polisportivo Provinciale, typically home to Italian lower-league side Trapani, staged the encounter far from either team’s home region.

The result does little to alter the early group standings but provides each team with a hard-earned point as they look to build momentum. Both Šumperk and TJ Břidličná will aim to convert similar performances into victories in their upcoming fixtures to improve their positioning in the cup table and their form overall.
