Argentina U20 Rallies for Draw With Japan U19 in Swiss Tournament

TAVERNE, Switzerland (April 18, 2026) (Interstat) — Argentina U20 twice surrendered a lead to draw Japan U19 2-2 in an international friendly Saturday at Campo Comunale Taverne. The match was organized by the A-10 group of Switzerland’s 1. Liga Classic.

Argentina built a 2-0 first-half advantage with goals from Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra in the 37th minute and Nicolás Paz Martínez in the 43rd. Japan U19 halved the deficit in the 60th minute through Isa Sakamoto, but Santiago Thomas Castro restored Argentina’s two-goal cushion just four minutes later. Substitute Ayumu Yokoyama scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal for Japan in the 91st minute to secure the draw. Argentina’s Castro received a yellow card during the match.

The result defied a pre-game projection from Interstat that heavily favored Argentina to win.
