Sliema Wanderers vs Balzan

VALLETTA, Malta (Interstat) — Sliema Wanderers open their FA Trophy campaign Friday against Balzan at Ta’ Qali, with Interstat’s ELO system giving the Wanderers a 72.90 percent probability of victory despite a projected 1-1 draw.

The May 1 matchup marks the first meeting between the two Maltese sides on the season. Both clubs enter the single-elimination tournament with vastly different recent workloads and results.

Balzan (0-2-1 in their last three) arrives after a wild 3-3 draw Sunday against Birżebbuga St Peter’s FC, a team they shut out 3-0 on Feb. 1. That draw followed a 1-0 win over Sirens and a 2-1 loss to Swieqi Utd. Under manager Oliver Spiteri, Balzan has shown offensive firepower—scoring three or more goals in five of their last nine matches—but defensive inconsistency allowed Saint Andrews to score four in a 4-1 loss Feb. 22.

Sliema Wanderers, by contrast, have played only five matches since mid-August 2025, the last a scoreless draw Oct. 24 against Zurrieq. That result extended a sluggish stretch: The Wanderers are winless in four (0-2-2), with their last victory a 1-0 decision over Tarxien Rainbows on Sept. 13. Manager Mark Miller’s side has struggled to generate offense, scoring just five goals across those five fixtures while allowing six. Their most impressive result was a 2-2 draw Sept. 16 against Birkirkara, a top-tier side.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a low-scoring affair, with the 1-1 draw prediction reflecting Balzan’s attacking potential against Sliema’s defensive structure. The ELO probability, however, heavily favors the Wanderers, who have not lost a match in regulation since Aug. 22 — a 1-0 setback to Mosta.

The FA Trophy is a knockout competition, meaning extra time and penalty kicks could decide the winner if the score remains level after 90 minutes. For Balzan, Friday offers a chance to capitalize on recent match rhythm. For Sliema, the extended layoff between Oct. 24 and Friday could prove a hindrance—or an opportunity to reset.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time at Ta’ Qali National Stadium.
