Hamrun Spartans vs Gudja United

TA’ QALI, Malta (Interstat) — A statistical contradiction will be at the heart of Saturday’s Malta FA Trophy matchup, as the Interstat game simulator projects a 1-1 draw between Hamrun Spartans and Gudja United at MFA Centenary Stadium while the same outlet’s ELO system gives the home side a 97.70 percent probability to win.

The second-round cup tie is scheduled for a 3 p.m. local kickoff Saturday, May 2.

Hamrun enters the match having last played March 4, a 3-1 loss at Valletta. That defeat snapped a six-match unbeaten run for the Spartans, who had won five of six prior. Overall this season, Hamrun has posted a 12-2-4 record across all competitions, with signature results including a 6-1 demolition of Birkirkara on Dec. 21 and a 5-0 win over Kampong Speu Province on Jan. 3. However, the Spartans have also faced elite European opposition, dropping decisions to Shakhtar Donetsk (2-0 on Dec. 11) and Shamrock Rovers (3-1 on Dec. 18).

Gudja United, by contrast, has played more recently and is in more active form. The visitors defeated Vittoriosa Stars 3-2 on April 18, their third win in four matches. That stretch includes a 2-0 clean sheet at Mgarr United on April 12 and a 3-0 shutout of Mtarfa on March 15. The lone loss in that span was a 2-1 defeat at Zebbug Rangers on April 4. Overall this season, Gudja has compiled a 7-5-7 record, with the most notable result being a 3-3 draw at Marsa on March 8.

The matchup marks the second meeting between the sides this season. Hamrun won the first encounter, a 1-0 victory at home Nov. 22, on a second-half goal. The Spartans have won three of the last four fixtures in the series.

Saturday’s winner advances to the quarterfinals of the Malta FA Trophy. The tournament is organized by the Malta Football Association.
