Juventus vs. Lietuvos rytas

VILNIUS, Lithuania (Interstat) — The Lithuanian Basketball League’s regular season enters a critical stretch Saturday when the league-leading Lietuvos rytas host Juventus at Siemens Arena in a matchup that carries significant playoff implications.

Lietuvos rytas (32-19) sit atop the LKL standings, while Juventus (14-22) are fighting to climb out of the bottom half of the table. Saturday’s game, set for a 6 p.m. local tipoff, comes just two days after Juventus handed Lietuvos rytas a 92-84 defeat on its home floor, snapping a two-game losing streak for the visiting side and ending Lietuvos rytas’ modest winning run.

Juventus enters the contest with momentum, having won four of its last five games overall. The lone loss in that stretch came May 15 against powerhouse Zalgiris. The team’s recent surge has been powered largely by forward Maxwell Lewis, who has emerged as a consistent force. Lewis posted 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks in Thursday’s win over Lietuvos rytas, playing 33 minutes. Over his last six games, he has averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, including a 24-point, seven-rebound outing against Neptūnas on May 2. He also recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds against Kedainiai Nevezis on May 9.

Lietuvos rytas will look to rebound from Thursday’s loss, which snapped a stretch of three wins in four games. Center Arturas Gudaitis has been the team’s most reliable performer, posting 16 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes against Juventus on Thursday. Over his last four contests, Gudaitis has averaged 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds. He scored a season-high 19 points against Neptūnas on April 29.

The teams have split their last five meetings, with each side winning twice at home. Lietuvos rytas defeated Juventus 102-80 on April 25 in Vilnius, while Juventus won 87-82 at home on Feb. 17. The road team has lost three of the last five matchups.

For Juventus, guard Malik Johnson and forward Lukas Uleckas have provided strong support. Uleckas contributed 15 points and eight rebounds in Thursday’s win. Lietuvos rytas will rely on guard Augustas Marciulionis, who had 15 points, four rebounds and five assists in the most recent meeting, and forward Gytis Masiulis, who added 13 points and five rebounds.

Saturday’s game marks the fourth of five regular-season meetings between the teams. The season series finale is scheduled for June 6 in Vilnius.
