Euroins Cherno More vs. Balkan

BOTEVGRAD, Bulgaria (Interstat) — The Bulgarian NBL’s top two regular-season teams meet Monday afternoon when Balkan hosts Euroins Cherno More at 7 p.m. local time in a pivotal matchup that could tighten the race for the final playoff seedings.

Balkan (27-8) enters on a six-game winning streak, its most recent a 91-89 overtime thriller Saturday at home against the same Euroins Cherno More club. That victory extended Balkan’s lead atop the standings, but Monday’s rematch offers the visitors a chance to avenge that loss and close the gap.

Euroins Cherno More (24-10) has split its last four games, most recently falling to Balkan in OT. The visitors have shown resilience, winning three of their past five contests. Their offense has been potent, averaging 93 points over the last 10 games, but defense has been inconsistent, allowing 87 or more in two of those outings.

Players to watch

For Euroins Cherno More, forward Alonzo Gaffney has been a steady contributor. In four games spanning Apr. 25 to May 4, Gaffney averaged 18 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He posted 23 points and seven boards in a 94-91 win over Spartak Pleven on May 4, and 17 points with seven rebounds in a loss at Spartak Pleven on May 1. His versatility inside and on the perimeter will be key against Balkan’s balanced attack.

Balkan counter with forward Dimitar Dimitrov, who has been equally consistent. Over his last five games, Dimitrov averaged 15 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He recorded 14 points and nine rebounds in a 103-83 win at Minyor on May 1, and 25 points in a 96-89 victory at Beroe Stara Zagora on Apr. 20. His ability to score in the paint and stretch the floor makes him a matchup problem.

Head-to-head

Saturday’s overtime thriller marked the fourth meeting this season between the two teams, and Balkan holds a 3-1 edge in the series. The home team won each of the prior contests: Balkan won 80-79 on Apr. 6 and 85-82 on Nov. 16, 2025, while Euroins Cherno More won 93-66 on Jan. 26, 2026, at home.

Recent results

Euroins Cherno More is coming off a 94-91 win over Spartak Pleven on May 4, preceded by a 74-86 loss at Spartak Pleven on May 1, and an 88-65 home win over Spartak Pleven on Apr. 29. The team also beat Shumen 104-87 on Apr. 25.

Balkan’s winning streak includes a 103-83 win at Minyor on May 1, a 105-66 home rout of Minyor on Apr. 29, a 93-86 victory over Botev 2012 on Apr. 25, and a 96-89 win at Beroe Stara Zagora on Apr. 20.

With both teams jockeying for position, Monday’s game at Balkan’s home court in Botevgrad promises intensity. The dynamic between Gaffney’s scoring and Dimitrov’s all-around game could determine whether Balkan extends its streak or Euroins Cherno More evens the series.
