Rilski Sportist vs. Beroe Stara Zagora

STARA ZAGORA, Bulgaria (Interstat) — Rilski Sportist, winners of 27 of 38 games this season, visits Beroe Stara Zagora on Saturday at Obshtinska in a Bulgarian National Basketball League matchup that pits the league’s second-best team against a cellar-dweller.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. local time.

Rilski Sportist (27-11) has dominated the season series, winning all four previous meetings. The most recent came Thursday, when Rilski defeated Beroe 89-69 at home. The other three contests were similarly lopsided: a 98-81 win March 29, a 94-73 victory Jan. 18 and a 96-74 triumph Nov. 8.

Rilski enters Saturday’s game on a four-game winning streak. After beating Beroe on Thursday, the team posted wins over Spartak Pleven (109-88 on April 25), Akademic Plovdiv (86-73 on April 19) and Botev 2012 (96-89 on April 9).

Guard Alan Arnett has been a consistent contributor. In his last four outings he averaged 9.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in about 22 minutes per game. Arnett scored 19 points against Spartak Pleven on April 25, added 13 points against Botev 2012 on April 9, and recorded five points against Loko Plovdiv on April 5.

Beroe Stara Zagora (11-20) has lost two straight and four of its last five. The only win in that stretch came April 10 against Levski Sofia, 92-76. Since then Beroe fell 117-76 at Euroins Cherno More on April 16 and lost 96-89 at home to Balkan on April 20 before Thursday’s defeat to Rilski.

Guard Jalen Benjamin leads Beroe’s attack. In his last four games he averaged 10.5 points, 0.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists. He poured in 26 points and eight assists against Balkan on April 20, but managed just seven points and two assists in a 92-76 win over Levski Sofia on April 10. Benjamin also struggled against Euroins Cherno More, scoring four points with two assists in 10 minutes.

Beroe’s defense has been porous, allowing 94.3 points per game over its last four contests. Rilski, meanwhile, has averaged 98.5 points over its last four games.

The two teams will meet one final time after Saturday, with the regular season winding down. Rilski is fighting for playoff positioning, while Beroe hopes to finish strong and build momentum for next season.
