Shumen vs. Akademic Plovdiv

Preview: Shumen Looks to Snap Skid Against Akademic Plovdiv in NBL Matchup

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria (Interstat) — Two struggling Bulgarian National Basketball League sides will meet Monday when Akademic Plovdiv hosts Shumen at POWER Plovdiv.

The matchup features teams at the bottom of the standings, both seeking to reverse recent fortunes. Akademic Plovdiv (8-17 overall) enters on a five-game losing streak but holds a significant edge in the season series, having defeated Shumen twice already. The home team won 90-78 in Shumen on Jan. 17 and 95-68 on Nov. 10.

Shumen (3-21) carries the league’s worst record and has lost 10 of its last 11 games, including a 95-63 defeat to Rilski Sportist on Wednesday. Its only victory in that stretch was a 77-72 win over Levski Sofia on Feb. 20.

A key battle will be in the frontcourt between two consistent performers. Shumen will rely on forward Jalen Barr, who has posted six consecutive double-doubles. In his last five games, Barr is averaging 18.0 points and 11.6 rebounds, including a 30-point, 16-rebound effort in a loss to Beroe Stara Zagora on March 13.

He will be matched against Akademic Plovdiv center Obrad Tomic, who is also in strong form. Tomic has recorded a double-double in three of his last four contests, highlighted by an 18-point, 16-rebound performance in the team’s most recent loss to Botev 2012.

While Akademic Plovdiv has struggled lately, its victories this season include a notable 92-83 road win over Levski Sofia on March 4. Shumen’s last win came over a month ago, and its road record remains a significant hurdle.

The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. local time. For Akademic Plovdiv, it’s a chance to halt its slide and complete a season sweep. For Shumen, it represents an opportunity to find a rare bright spot in a difficult season and gain momentum before a road matchup at Levski Sofia next Saturday.
