Uralmash vs. Samara
Preview: Uralmash Visits Struggling Samara in VTB United League Matchup
SAMARA, Russia (Interstat) — A clash between teams at the bottom of the VTB United League standings is set for Wednesday when Uralmash travels to face Samara at SKK Drorec Sporta.
Uralmash (3-5 across all competitions) enters with modest momentum from its last outing, a 91-85 overtime road victory against Parma Basket Perm on Feb. 1. Octavius Ellis led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds, supported by Garrett Nevels’ 15 points and seven assists. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Uralmash, which had previously fallen to CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv Kuban, MBA Moscow and Avtodor Saratov.
Samara (2-24) is mired in a severe slump, having lost 22 of its last 23 games. Its lone victory in that span was a 95-87 win at Avtodor Saratov on Feb. 12. The team is coming off a 94-87 home loss to Nizhny Novgorod on Feb. 18.
The primary bright spot for Samara has been forward Nikita Mikhailovskii. He is coming off consecutive dominant performances, posting a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds against Nizhny Novgorod after recording 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the win over Avtodor. Containing Mikhailovskii will be a key focus for Uralmash’s frontcourt, likely involving Ellis and Javonte Douglas.
Despite Samara’s dismal record, Uralmash cannot afford complacency. Samara’s two wins this season demonstrate a capacity to compete, and playing at home may provide a boost. Uralmash’s road record is a mixed bag, with wins at Parma and Nizhny Novgorod but several tight losses.
This game represents a critical opportunity for both clubs. For Uralmash, it is a chance to build a winning streak and climb the table. For Samara, it is a rare matchup against a team not entrenched in the league’s upper echelon, offering a plausible path to a desperately needed victory.
The teams are scheduled to meet again in Samara on April 15.
