Preview: Esgueira Looks to Avenge Earlier Loss Against Vitoria in LPB Clash

GUIMARAES, Portugal (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the back half of the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol season will meet Saturday when Esgueira visits Vitoria at Pavilhao Vitoria Sport Clube.

The matchup features clubs with sub-.500 records, as Esgueira enters at 8-10 and Vitoria sits at 6-13 across all competitions. Despite their standings, both sides have shown recent flashes of offensive capability, setting the stage for a potentially high-scoring contest.

Esgueira arrives with confidence from a 97-83 overtime victory over Imortal Albufeira on April 4. The team will lean on guard Delvin Barnstable, who has been in stellar form. Barnstable scored 28 points in that win and is averaging 22.8 points over his last four games. His backcourt battle with Vitoria’s Malique Jacobs will be a key focal point.

Vitoria aims to halt a two-game skid, most recently an 84-101 loss to Braga. Jacobs has been a bright spot, averaging 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists over his last four outings. His versatility will be crucial for a Vitoria squad that has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 94.6 points in its last five games.

History favors the home side. In their most recent meeting on Dec. 28, Vitoria secured a 103-91 road win over Esgueira. Vitoria’s offense was efficient that afternoon, a performance it will need to replicate to protect its home court.

For Esgueira, supporting Barnstable’s scoring will be vital. Nathan Bilamu (23 points) and Malik Porter (10 points, 12 rebounds) were instrumental in the recent overtime win and provide necessary interior balance.

Vitoria will need a collective effort beyond Jacobs. Chaunce Jenkins is coming off a 20-point, 7-assist performance against Braga, offering a secondary playmaking threat.

With both teams looking to climb the LPB table, Saturday’s contest represents a critical opportunity to string together a late-season run. Tip-off is set for Saturday evening in Guimaraes.
