Northern Iowa rolls past Drake behind early burst, defensive score
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — Northern Iowa scored touchdowns in every quarter, broke the game open with a dominant second-quarter run and added a defensive touchdown in the third quarter to pull away from Drake in a 56-14 victory Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, in a NCAA Football Championship Division game at the UNI-Dome. The Panthers improved to 1-1, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-3. Northern Iowa’s offense found the end zone early, and its defense made sure Drake never found a rhythm after the opening quarter.
The Panthers opened the scoring with a 12-yard run by B. Gordon with 12:15 remaining in the first quarter. Max Bartachek made the extra point. Northern Iowa added to its lead when Jaxon Dailey completed a short left pass to Brady McCullough, who caught the ball near the goal line and finished a 14-yard touchdown with 7:56 left. Bartachek again converted. Drake managed to answer with a touchdown of its own in the opening quarter, scoring seven points to stay within reach, but the Bulldogs’ early success did not last.
Northern Iowa put the game further out of reach in the second quarter. Dailey connected with McCullough again, this time on a short middle pass that covered 13 yards for a touchdown with 41 seconds remaining before halftime. Bartachek’s extra point capped the drive. The Panthers scored 21 points in the second quarter, turning a competitive opening period into a lopsided contest. Drake’s offense, which had scored seven points in the first quarter, added another touchdown before halftime but could not match Northern Iowa’s pace. By the time the teams reached the locker room, the Panthers had control.
The third quarter featured more of the same. Christian Collins rushed left for a 7-yard touchdown with 11:41 remaining, and Bartachek’s kick made the score 28-14. Moments later, Northern Iowa’s defense produced the game’s most decisive play. Drake quarterback R. Warzynski attempted a pass that was intercepted by C. Jaworski at the Northern Iowa 20-yard line. Jaworski returned the interception 80 yards for a touchdown with 8:50 left in the quarter. Bartachek added the extra point, extending the Panthers’ lead and silencing any hope of a Drake comeback.
Northern Iowa kept rolling on offense. M. Bormann rushed up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter, and Bartachek’s extra point made it 42-14. The Panthers scored seven points in the third quarter to go with their 21-point second quarter and a fast start. Drake, meanwhile, was held scoreless after halftime. The Bulldogs’ two touchdowns came earlier in the game, but the offense could not sustain drives against a Northern Iowa defense that tightened as the game wore on.
The Panthers finished the scoring in the fourth quarter when C. Kamara rushed left for a 28-yard touchdown with 6:42 remaining. R. Alvarenga-Servellon made the extra point. Northern Iowa added 21 points in the fourth quarter to reach 56. The final margin reflected the Panthers’ balance. They scored through the air, on the ground and on defense, while Drake was limited to 14 points and never threatened in the second half.
The game was played at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa, a venue that has long given Northern Iowa a strong home-field advantage. The Panthers entered the game after a 34-24 loss at Eastern Washington on Sept. 5. They evened their record at 1-1 with the win. Drake, meanwhile, remained winless. The Bulldogs lost at Montana 45-10 on Sept. 5 and dropped a 38-35 decision to South Dakota Mines on Aug. 27 in their season opener. Drake’s schedule has been challenging, and the trip to Cedar Falls added another difficult result.
