Fresno State Rolls Past Sacramento State in Home Rout
FRESNO (Interstat) — Fresno State scored 32 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 49-3 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game at Valley Children’s Stadium. The Bulldogs added 14 points in the second quarter and three in the third. The Hornets scored three points in the second quarter. Fresno State improved to 1-1. Sacramento State dropped to 1-2.
The game gave Fresno State a bounce-back result after a 39-0 loss at Southern California on Sept. 4. Sacramento State entered with a split of its first two games, having beaten Mississippi Valley State 52-0 on Sept. 5 after a 28-17 loss at Eastern Michigan on Aug. 29. The Hornets’ visit to Fresno marked their third game of the season and their first against a Football Bowl Division opponent from California this year.
Fresno State wasted little time establishing control. The Bulldogs scored 32 points in the opening quarter, taking advantage of field position and quick possessions. Sacramento State’s defense spent much of the period on the field, and the Hornets’ offense struggled to sustain drives. By the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs had built a lead that proved far too large to overcome.
Fresno State’s quick start forced Sacramento State to play from behind. The Hornets tried to establish the running game, but they were unable to sustain drives. Sacramento State’s offense struggled to answer. The Bulldogs’ special teams also helped set up scoring chances.
The Bulldogs added 14 points in the second quarter. Sacramento State’s only points of the game came on a Grant Meadors 35-yard field goal. Fresno State’s offense continued to move the ball efficiently, and the Bulldogs entered halftime with a comfortable advantage. The Hornets were unable to generate a touchdown drive against Fresno State’s defense.
Fresno State’s offense found success on the ground. Mandal directed the Bulldogs’ attack, and Donelson provided a powerful complement in the running game. Sacramento State’s defense made a few stops but could not contain Fresno State for long stretches. The Bulldogs’ lead continued to grow as the game moved into the second half.
Jayden Mandal, a quarterback from Clovis, California, scored on a 1-yard rush up the middle for Fresno State. M. Watanabe kicked the extra point. Bryson Donelson also reached the end zone on an 11-yard run up the middle, with Watanabe again converting the extra point. Donelson later added touchdown runs of 5 yards and 56 yards, both to the right side. Watanabe kicked a 28-yard field goal. Rayshon Luke had a 42-yard touchdown run to the right nullified by a holding penalty. Meadors connected on his 35-yard field goal for Sacramento State.
Fresno State’s rushing attack produced several explosive plays. Mandal’s short scoring run capped a drive, while Donelson’s longer runs helped the Bulldogs pull away. Luke’s nullified touchdown came on a 42-yard gain before the penalty erased the score. Sacramento State’s defense, which had hoped to slow the Bulldogs, could not prevent the big plays that defined the afternoon.
