Alcorn State at Prairie View
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (Interstat) — Alcorn State will travel to face Prairie View on Saturday in an NCAA Football Championship Division matchup at Panther Stadium, with both teams looking to build late-season momentum.
Alcorn State (4-3) enters after a 63-7 home victory over Arkansas Baptist. The Braves have shown offensive firepower at times this season, including a 59-point output in a loss at Grambling and a 53-51 overtime win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Alcorn State has also posted wins over Texas Southern and Miles College while falling to North Alabama and Southern Mississippi.
Prairie View (2-5) enters after a 28-14 home loss to Southern. The Panthers have struggled to string together wins, but they have a home victory over Texas Southern and a narrow one-point loss at Mississippi Valley State. Prairie View also dropped games to Grambling, Stephen F. Austin, Baylor and Tarleton State.
The Braves’ offense will be led by quarterback Jaylon Tolbert, a player to watch. Tolbert has produced several strong recent performances. Against Grambling, he passed for 411 yards and accounted for five touchdowns while adding 33 rushing yards. He threw for 332 yards and ran for 79 yards with two touchdowns against Texas Southern. In a loss at North Alabama, Tolbert passed for 270 yards and scored once.
Prairie View will counter with quarterback Tevin Carter, another player to watch. Carter has been active as a runner and passer. He passed for 179 yards and ran for 50 yards with a touchdown against Southern. He ran for 94 yards and accounted for multiple scores against Mississippi Valley State. Earlier in the season, he passed for 160 yards, ran for 38 yards and scored twice.
The matchup at Panther Stadium features two teams familiar with Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alcorn State will try to control the ball through Tolbert and turn its recent scoring success into another conference win. Prairie View will lean on Carter and a rushing attack that found some success against Southern, when Jahbari Kuykendall ran for 86 yards.
Alcorn State’s defense will need to contain Carter on designed runs and scrambles. Prairie View’s defense will focus on Tolbert, who has shown the ability to stretch the field vertically and make plays with his legs. Special teams and turnovers could also shape a game between teams with contrasting recent results.
The Braves hold the better overall record, but the Panthers are at home and have shown they can move the ball when Carter is involved in the running game. Alcorn State has scored at least 43 points in three of its past four games, while Prairie View has been held to 27 points or fewer in each of its past five contests.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Prairie View to defeat Alcorn State 47-33.
