INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — Dayton will try to build on a high-scoring win when the Flyers visit Butler on Saturday for an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Saint Vincent Field.

Dayton enters at 4-1 and has won four of five games. The Flyers opened the season with wins over Fairmont State, Thomas More and Eastern Kentucky before a 30-22 loss at Drake. Dayton bounced back with a 56-28 home win over Morehead State.

Quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer is the player to watch for Dayton. In the win over Morehead State, Schondelmyer threw for 214 yards and four touchdowns and punted for 34 yards. He threw for 187 yards and a touchdown and ran for 8 yards at Drake, and he passed for 146 yards and a score while running for 3 yards at Eastern Kentucky. Gavin Lochow caught five passes for 73 yards and returned a kick 32 yards in the Morehead State win, scoring twice. Mason Hackett rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Butler is 5-1 and has won four straight. The Bulldogs opened with a 27-23 win over Georgetown (Ky.) before a 51-24 loss at Montana State. Butler then beat Franklin 52-0, Chicago State 47-20, Valparaiso 33-28 and San Diego 41-10.

Quarterback Gabe Passini leads the Bulldogs. Against San Diego, Passini passed for 217 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 56 yards on 12 carries and punted for 16 yards. Sam Manna ran for 151 yards and a touchdown in the same game. Butler’s offense has scored at least 33 points in four consecutive games and has topped 40 points three times in that stretch.

Dayton’s offense has been productive behind Schondelmyer, who has thrown for touchdowns in each of his past three games and can also affect field position with his punting. The Flyers have scored at least 30 points in three of their five games. Butler has relied on Passini’s arm and legs, along with a running game that produced a breakout performance from Manna against San Diego. The Bulldogs will try to protect their home field and extend their winning streak. Dayton will seek a road win against a quality opponent and keep pace in the NCAA Football Championship Division race. Both teams have shown the ability to score quickly, making special teams and turnovers important factors. Saint Vincent Field will host a matchup between teams with strong records and playoff ambitions. Both teams remain in the chase for postseason consideration. Dayton’s defense will focus on containing Passini and Manna, while Butler’s defense must slow Schondelmyer and the Flyers’ skill players.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Dayton 32, Butler 28.
