Morgan State at Tennessee State
NASHVILLE (Interstat) — Morgan State (5-1) will visit Tennessee State (1-5) on Saturday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, for an NCAA Football Championship Division game. The Bears bring a four-game winning streak and the stronger record into the matchup. The Tigers return home after a difficult stretch and will try to snap a two-game losing streak.
Morgan State has leaned on quarterback Cameron Edge. In the win over Robert Morris, Edge completed 18 of 29 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown and added seven rushes for 61 yards. Keith Jenkins Jr. also made an impact in that victory, scoring two touchdowns while recording 98 rushing yards, 47 receiving yards and 41 kickoff return yards. Earlier this season, Edge threw for 444 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores in a 38-35 win over Villanova. Against Towson, Edge passed for 209 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-26 victory. His ability to extend plays with his legs and push the ball downfield gives Morgan State a dynamic threat against a Tennessee State defense that has struggled to slow opponents.
Tennessee State has a counter in quarterback Daylin Lee, who has produced several strong passing games despite the Tigers’ record. In the loss to Tennessee-Martin, Lee completed 20 of 39 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw for 245 yards and two scores and ran for another touchdown against Western Illinois. In an earlier win at Florida A&M, Lee passed for 259 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 10 yards. His connection to the passing attack will be critical if the Tigers hope to keep pace.
Morgan State’s recent results include wins over Villanova, Towson, Virginia Lynchburg, and North Carolina A&T, with its only loss coming at Arizona State. Tennessee State opened with a home loss to Jackson State, then fell at Georgia and Alabama A&M before winning at Florida A&M. The Tigers then lost at Western Illinois and at home to Tennessee-Martin. The Bears have momentum and the better record, but the Tigers have shown they can move the ball through the air.
The game could hinge on which defense can create enough stops. Morgan State has found ways to win close games, while Tennessee State has allowed 28 or more points in each of its past two contests. The Bears will look to control possession and let Edge make plays. The Tigers will need Lee and the passing game to convert scoring opportunities and avoid turnovers.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Morgan State to defeat Tennessee State 37-25.
