Lehigh Routs Fordham in Football Championship Division Home Game

BETHLEHEM (Interstat) — Derek Morgan threw three touchdown passes and Lehigh scored 31 first-quarter points Saturday on the way to a 34-0 victory over Fordham in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks remained unbeaten at 6-0, while the Rams fell to 1-5. Morgan, a quarterback from Goddard, Kan., completed 10 of 20 passes for 152 yards, rushed three times for 11 yards and accounted for three touchdowns. Lehigh’s defense intercepted three passes and recorded multiple sacks, never allowing Fordham into the end zone. Fordham finished with zero points. The Mountain Hawks added three points in the second quarter and controlled the rest of the game.

Lehigh set the tone immediately. Morgan connected with Anthony Feaster for a 30-yard touchdown, then found Aiden Schomp for a 10-yard score. L.Yoder added a 10-yard rushing touchdown, and Morgan and Feaster hooked up again for a 29-yard touchdown. Connor Poole kicked field goals, including a 29-yarder, as the Mountain Hawks built a 31-0 lead after the first quarter. Lehigh added three more points in the second quarter and coasted from there. Feaster finished with three receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Schomp caught one pass for 10 yards and a score. Morgan also completed passes to Nick Palumbo for 24 yards on two catches, Joseph Marranca for 21 yards, Bryce Werner for 9 yards and Jamaire Harden for 9 yards. Aaron Crossley ran twice for 9 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards. Poole punted six times for 231 yards. Lucas Manderbach and Lehigh’s team unit were also listed among key performers but did not record countable statistics.

Fordham’s offense moved the ball at times but could not finish. Gunnar Smith completed 22 of 44 passes for 190 yards and ran nine times for 7 yards. Andrew Bond caught three passes for 22 yards. KJ Reed had one reception for 4 yards, John Morris had one for 8 yards and Chris Tuck II had one for 16 yards. The Rams were kept off the scoreboard by a Lehigh defense that registered three interceptions and several sacks. Ignatious Williams, William Parton and Nick Peltekian each intercepted a pass. Parton finished with five tackles and one interception. Peltekian added four punt returns for 72 yards, one tackle and one interception. Williams recorded three tackles and one interception.

Lehigh’s defense received contributions across the field. Josh Lenart made five tackles, Joshua Jones had four, and Davis Rice and Tre Meadows each finished with three. Dylan Rhone, Mick McKee, Luke Denny and TJ Hill each made two tackles. Preston Davis, Kingsley Acho, Jadin Nelson, Broc Bender, Aidan Williams and Luke Reilly each recorded a sack. Davis had two tackles and a sack, Acho had one tackle and a sack, Nelson had one tackle and a sack, Bender had one tackle and a sack, Aidan Williams had two tackles and a sack, and Reilly had two tackles and a sack. DJ Brown made two tackles. Jackson Dowd, Tristan Yepdo, Lorenzo Portella, Devin Andrews, Walker Blair, Cayden Vassa, Cole Hughes and Nolan Coen each added one tackle. Silas Day recorded one tackle.

Fordham’s defensive effort included a game-high 10 tackles from Boogie Owens. Andrew Osmun made nine tackles, Kemaury Tye had eight, Krystian Pothel added six, and AJ Revella finished with five tackles and one quarterback hurry. James Dunnemann II made three tackles and Jakub Mwangelwa had two tackles and a 3-yard kick return. The Rams also got one reception from Chris Tuck II, though he primarily plays defense. Fordham’s season has been difficult, with the loss to Lehigh leaving the Rams at 1-5. Their only victory this season came against William & Mary. Fordham will look to regroup when it hosts Richmond in its next game.

Lehigh’s win continued a strong start. The Mountain Hawks have also defeated Penn, Dartmouth, William & Mary, Georgetown and Holy Cross this season. Lehigh is scheduled to play at Cornell next. Morgan’s previous recent performance came against Penn, when he completed 6 of 15 passes for 49 yards, ran seven times for 31 yards and scored two touchdowns. Against Fordham, he was the top star, guiding an offense that scored early and often. The Mountain Hawks’ rushing attack was limited but effective, with Morgan gaining 11 yards on three carries and Crossley adding 9 yards on two attempts. Lehigh’s special teams also contributed, with Poole handling punting duties and kicking duties. The Mountain Hawks’ defense finished with three interceptions and six sacks, a decisive combination.

Fordham entered the game looking to build on its lone win of the season, but the Rams could not match Lehigh’s early pace. The Mountain Hawks scored on four touchdown plays and a field goal in the opening quarter, then added another field goal in the second. Lehigh’s offensive line gave Morgan time to find receivers downfield, and the defense consistently pressured Smith. The Rams managed several completions but never found the end zone. Lehigh’s secondary held firm, and the front seven produced enough pressure to disrupt Fordham’s timing. The result kept Lehigh perfect on the season and handed Fordham its fifth loss.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Lehigh 51, Fordham 10. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Lehigh with a 98.9 percent probability to win. Fordham had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +21.5. The total score of 34 went over the over/under line of 44.5.
