Wagner at Central Connecticut
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Interstat) — Wagner visits Central Connecticut on Saturday for an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Arute Field. The Seahawks enter 1-3, while the Blue Devils are 0-3.
The game is at Arute Field in New Britain, Conn., where the forecast at game time calls for 66 degrees.
Wagner has been hurt by lopsided defeats. The Seahawks’ most recent result was a 49-7 loss at California. Quarterback Benjamin Newman completed 15 of 31 passes for 86 yards, rushed for 23 yards and scored a touchdown. Shawn James added 36 rushing yards on eight carries.
Newman is the player to watch for Wagner. He will need to help the Seahawks sustain drives against a Central Connecticut defense that has struggled. Wagner’s other results include a 31-7 home win over Southern Connecticut State, a 28-7 home loss to Robert Morris and an 87-3 loss at James Madison.
Central Connecticut returns home after a 35-30 loss at Montana State. The Blue Devils kept that game close behind quarterback Brett Griffis, who completed 18 of 30 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, rushed 15 times for 43 yards and scored another touchdown. Davon Smith Jr. ran 19 times for 92 yards and caught one pass for 4 yards.
Griffis is the player to watch for Central Connecticut. His ability to throw and run gives the Blue Devils a dual threat. Central Connecticut opened the season with a 59-20 loss at South Dakota and a 63-10 loss at Toledo. Despite the 0-3 record, the Blue Devils have shown offensive promise and will seek their first win.
For Wagner, success starts with Newman and the passing game. The Seahawks have been held to seven points in two of their first four games and must protect the ball. Central Connecticut will lean on Griffis and Smith as it seeks balance. The Blue Devils scored 30 points in their most recent game and will try to carry that momentum into this home game.
Defensively, Wagner must contain Griffis, who can extend plays with his legs. Central Connecticut must limit Newman’s chances to find rhythm. Special teams and field position could matter in a game between teams still searching for consistency.
Wagner’s schedule ahead includes a home game against Princeton and a road trip to Duquesne. Central Connecticut’s upcoming slate includes a home game against American International and a road game at Mercyhurst. But both teams are focused on Saturday and Arute Field.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Central Connecticut to defeat Wagner 42-18.
