Cornell at Georgetown
WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Cornell will be the visiting team Saturday when it faces Georgetown in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Cooper Field. Georgetown will be the home team for the matchup. The Big Red (1-1) will look to build on their most recent result, a 38-25 win over Yale, while the Hoyas (0-3) remain in search of their first victory after a 20-17 home loss to Columbia. The forecast at game time is 85 degrees.
Cornell’s offense will again center on quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio. In the win over Yale, he passed for 152 yards and two touchdowns and added 27 rushing yards. Earlier this season, in a loss at Colgate, he passed for 132 yards and ran for 52 yards. Running backs Ean Pope and Jordan Triplett also contributed in the Yale victory, with Pope rushing four times for 48 yards and a touchdown and Triplett carrying 11 times for 31 yards and a score. Georgetown’s defense will need to account for Bass-Sulpizio’s ability to extend plays and distribute the ball.
Georgetown will counter with quarterback Jack Johnson, a steady presence for the Hoyas. In the loss to Columbia, Johnson passed for 119 yards and a touchdown and ran for 22 yards. He passed for 193 yards and three touchdowns in a loss at Richmond and added 53 passing yards, 46 rushing yards and a touchdown in a loss to Lehigh. Running back Clay Ash rushed 15 times for 79 yards in the Columbia game, while Jayden Sumpter added eight carries for 13 yards. The Hoyas will seek more balance and production around Johnson as they try to break through.
Cornell’s most recent outing showed a productive ground game alongside Bass-Sulpizio. Pope and Triplett each found the end zone against Yale, giving the Big Red multiple options in the backfield. Georgetown’s recent games have included solid individual efforts from Johnson and Ash, but the Hoyas have been unable to close out tight contests. They enter at 0-3 and are coming off a 20-17 loss to Columbia. The matchup at Cooper Field could hinge on which team protects the ball and finishes drives.
Georgetown will host Bucknell next, while Cornell is set to host Harvard next. For now, both teams will focus on Saturday’s meeting in Washington. The Big Red will look to carry their recent offensive success into the matchup, while the Hoyas seek a breakthrough at home. Cornell will aim to move above .500, while Georgetown will try to secure its first win of the season.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Georgetown 30, Cornell 29.
