Arizona edges Texas Christian in hard-fought home victory

TUCSON (Interstat) — Arizona held off visiting Texas Christian 29-28 Friday at Casino Del Sol Stadium in a Football Bowl Subdivision game. The Wildcats improved to 7-2, while the Horned Frogs dropped to 4-5. A crowd of 40,501 watched Arizona secure the narrow win after a back-and-forth game. Texas Christian scored 14 points in the first quarter, seven in the second and seven in the third. Arizona scored 10 in the first, seven in the second and 12 in the third. The Wildcats’ final margin held after a scoreless fourth quarter.

The Wildcats opened the scoring through Noah Fifita, who found Isaiah Mizell for a 20-yard touchdown. Michael Salgado-Medina added a 43-yard field goal as Arizona built an early advantage. Texas Christian answered behind Jaden Craig, whose 7-yard touchdown run brought the Horned Frogs closer. Hudson Hooper then delivered one of the game’s biggest plays, intercepting Fifita and returning the ball 93 yards for a touchdown. Kyle Lemmermann converted the extra point on that return, helping Texas Christian take a 21-17 lead into halftime. The Horned Frogs had scored 14 first-quarter points and seven in the second, while Arizona had 10 in the first and seven in the second.

The third quarter changed the game’s shape. Arizona scored 12 points in the period, while Texas Christian managed seven. Fifita broke free for a 9-yard touchdown run, and Salgado-Medina remained steady on his kicking chances. Texas Christian stayed within reach when Craig connected with Jordan Dwyer on a 6-yard scoring pass. The Horned Frogs’ kicking game struggled, however, as Lemmermann missed a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter and had a 50-yard attempt blocked in the third. Arizona’s defense then protected the lead over the final quarter.

Fifita finished as the game’s top performer for Arizona. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown, and he carried six times for 9 yards and a score. Fifita’s poise in the pocket and his ability to extend plays kept the Wildcats’ offense moving against a TCU defense that mixed pressure with coverage. His previous recent outing included 417 passing yards and a touchdown in a loss to Texas Tech.

Craig guided Texas Christian with 13 completions on 19 attempts for 108 yards and a touchdown, and he added a rushing score. Dwyer caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Kari Ashley contributed eight receptions for 56 yards and carried twice for 2 yards. Amante Martin added two rushes for 12 yards. The Horned Frogs also received a punt return of 8 yards from Ed Small. Lemmermann handled the extra-point duties, and John Hoyet Chance punted three times for 152 yards.

Arizona’s supporting cast included Giovanni Richardson, who caught seven passes for 66 yards and ran once for 3 yards. Quincy Craig ran twice for 20 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards. Kedrick Reescano carried five times for 35 yards, and Antwan Roberts Jr. ran twice for 7 yards. Mizell finished with four catches for 39 yards and a touchdown, while Brandon Phelps added one reception for 8 yards. Taye Brown led the Wildcats’ defensive effort with seven tackles and two quarterback hurries. Tyrese Boss added four tackles and a quarterback hurry, Chase Kennedy made three tackles, and Cooper Blomstrom and Prince Williams each recorded a sack. Malcolm Hartzog Jr., Quinn Olson, Dwight Bootle II, Everett Roussaw Jr., Lee Molette III, Leroy Palu and Dajon Hinton each finished with a tackle. Chase Ridley punted three times for 121 yards.

Texas Christian’s defense was paced by Hooper, who had seven tackles, one interception and one touchdown. Jordan Lester added five tackles, while Kaden McFadden had four tackles and half a sack. Gil Jackson Jr. also made four tackles. Zach Chapman, Kylin Jackson and Jamel Johnson each recorded two tackles. John Schobel contributed two tackles and a quarterback hurry, and Ansel Din-Mbuh had one tackle and a quarterback hurry. Koron Hayward made one tackle and half a sack. CJ Woodfork added two tackles, and Paul Oyewale, Vernon Glover Jr., Teon Parks and Max Carroll each had one tackle. Tristan Johnson also was credited with a tackle.

Salgado-Medina made field goals from 43 and 23 yards and converted his extra-point opportunities. Lemmermann made his extra-point tries but was unable to connect on the two longer field-goal attempts. Arizona’s offense finished with enough balance to offset Texas Christian’s pressure, and the Wildcats’ defense held on for the final margin. The result gave Arizona its seventh win of the season and dropped Texas Christian below .500. The Horned Frogs had entered the game after a home win over Kansas and a home loss to West Virginia, while Arizona had split its previous two games against Texas Tech and Iowa State.

Texas Christian had entered the game with a 4-4 record after alternating wins and losses over its previous four games. Arizona had won two of its previous three games, including a 39-3 home victory over Iowa State and a 52-31 road win at West Virginia.
