Delaware rides Minicucci’s big day to win over Missouri State
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — Delaware used a prolific passing attack and a timely second-half surge to defeat Missouri State 61-38 on Tuesday in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Delaware Stadium. The Blue Hens improved to 3-4, while the Bears fell to 2-5. Attendance was 14,214. Delaware’s top star was Nick Minicucci, and the Blue Hens’ quarterback delivered a performance that helped turn a competitive game into a decisive home victory. The Blue Hens scored in every quarter and produced more than enough offense to overcome an early interception.
The game opened with early chances. Missouri State’s Yousef Obeid missed a 49-yard field goal on the opening possession. Delaware then leaned on its running game, as J. Silver broke a 42-yard run before K. Roberts scored on a 31-yard rush to give the Blue Hens the first touchdown. Missouri State responded with Connor Lair’s 15-yard touchdown run. Later in the first quarter, J.J. O’Neal intercepted Minicucci at the Delaware 47 and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown, giving Missouri State momentum. The Blue Hens answered behind Minicucci, whose passing and command of the offense kept Delaware in rhythm after the early turnover. Missouri State’s early special-teams miss loomed as the teams settled into a fast pace.
In the second quarter, Minicucci connected with Bryson Graves for a 6-yard touchdown and Scott Moore for a 26-yard score. Missouri State’s Henry Belin IV found Isaiah Myers for an 11-yard touchdown, and Tucker Smack made a 33-yard field goal for Delaware. Belin then hit Myers again for a 6-yard touchdown just before halftime. The teams traded scoring drives through the middle of the game, with neither side able to fully slow the other’s passing attack. Both quarterbacks found rhythm, and the offenses repeatedly attacked the middle of the field.
The third quarter brought more of the same. Minicucci hit Jo Silver for a 12-yard touchdown, and Lair answered with a 1-yard touchdown run for Missouri State. Minicucci then found Elijah Sessoms for a 3-yard touchdown and scored on a 1-yard run of his own. In the fourth quarter, J. Silver added a 3-yard touchdown run, Smack made a 25-yard field goal, and Obeid connected on a 27-yard field goal for Missouri State. Delaware’s defense made enough stops late, and the Blue Hens’ offense kept converting red-zone chances. The Blue Hens’ defense forced Missouri State into a field goal in the fourth quarter after the outcome had been decided.
Belin led Missouri State through the air, completing 26 of 35 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Minicucci, Delaware’s top star, completed 20 of 29 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns and added a short rushing score. Tyler Bell also saw time for Delaware and completed 2 of 4 passes for 25 yards while adding a 3-yard run. Christian Ford paced Missouri State’s defense with seven tackles. Malik Ganaway, Martavis Blackmon and Gilles Tchio each had three tackles. Tim Brantley Jr., Joel Kpassou and Joel Boamah each recorded four tackles. Jashawn Cooper posted five tackles and one sack. J.J. O’Neal had six tackles and a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown. Stratton Shufelt added three tackles. Jared Lloyd led the Bears with nine tackles. Dillon Hipp had two receptions for minus-1 yard. Jmariyae Robinson caught 10 passes for 85 yards and returned four kickoffs for 83 yards. Isaiah Myers had 11 receptions for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Ramone Green Jr. rushed six times for 19 yards. Connor Lair carried 15 times for 85 yards, caught three passes for 11 yards and scored twice. Stewart McDonald punted twice for 59 yards. Austin Yelder had one tackle. Caden Wiest returned one kickoff for 13 yards. Michael Osei-Bonsu, Anthony Mattison, Jalile Elliott and Blessing Igbinedion each had one tackle. Markell Chapman and Josh Lukusa each had one tackle and half a sack. Brycen Dorsey had one tackle. Yousef Obeid handled kicking duties. Antonio Smith had one tackle. Kaden Jones, Joshua Davis, Kellen Lindstrom, Camron Williams and Grayson Cutchlow each had two tackles. Khalil Anderson had two tackles and two quarterback hurries.
Delaware’s defensive front also affected the game. Sean Wilson had six receptions for 69 yards and one tackle for the Blue Hens. Blake Matthews recorded five tackles and three quarterback hurries. Jawarren Corbin had six tackles, one sack and one interception. Gavin Moul added nine tackles. Bryson Graves had two receptions for 6 yards and five kickoff returns for 160 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Sessoms caught two passes for 28 yards and a touchdown. Scott Moore had two receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Donovan Lewis caught seven passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Kshawn Cox Jr. made five tackles. Da’Wain Lofton ran once for 11 yards, and Nakeem Powell carried three times for 16 yards.
The most important stretch came as Delaware turned a competitive game into a comfortable win. Minicucci repeatedly found open receivers in the middle of the field, and his touchdown pass to Sessoms and his short scoring run helped the Blue Hens seize control. Missouri State’s Belin kept throwing with volume and produced a huge day through Myers, but Delaware’s balance and Minicucci’s touchdown production proved too much. The Blue Hens scored 61 points despite Minicucci’s early interception, a sign of how well they responded after Missouri State’s pick-six.
Missouri State finished with more passing yards through Belin and a monster receiving game from Myers, but Delaware’s efficiency in the red zone and Minicucci’s command of the offense made the difference. The Blue Hens’ defense also generated pressure, with Matthews’ three hurries and Corbin’s interception helping slow the Bears when the game was still in reach. Delaware’s special teams added a boost through Graves’ kickoff returns, while Smack’s field goals extended the lead. The Blue Hens now move on with a 3-4 record, while Missouri State sits at 2-5. Delaware’s win came after a narrow loss in its previous outing, while Missouri State’s slide continued.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Delaware 41, Missouri State 37. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Delaware with a 63.9 percent probability to win. Delaware had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -2.5. The total of 99 points went over the over/under line of 52.5.
