Virginia at SMU
DALLAS (Interstat) — Virginia will visit SMU on Saturday for an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision game at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The Cavaliers are 4-2, while the Mustangs are 4-1 and will play at home.
Virginia enters after a 28-25 win over Syracuse. Beau Pribula passed for 119 yards and rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown. Jekail Middlebrook added 17 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The Cavaliers have also beaten Delaware, Norfolk State and North Carolina State this season, and they have lost to Florida State and West Virginia.
Pribula remains the central figure in Virginia’s offense. Against Florida State, he passed for 168 yards and a touchdown. He threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score against Delaware. In a loss to West Virginia, he passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to extend plays with his legs and challenge defenses downfield will be important against SMU.
SMU comes in after a 25-16 win over Boston College. Kevin Jennings passed for 160 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score. Kendrick Raphael rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Derrick McFall contributed as both a receiver and runner, finishing with three catches for 33 yards and a score while adding 23 rushing yards on five carries. The Mustangs have also defeated Missouri State, UC Davis and Florida State, with their lone loss coming at Louisville.
Jennings has been productive throughout the season. He passed for 441 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score against Missouri State. In a loss to Louisville, he passed for 222 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 35 yards and another score. His connection with SMU’s skill players will test a Virginia defense that has had uneven results.
The matchup will be played at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. Virginia will look to build momentum after its narrow win over Syracuse, while SMU aims to protect its home field and stay near the top of its conference race. Both teams have shown the ability to score in bursts, but both have also had games in which consistency was an issue. Virginia’s running game, led by Middlebrook, could help control tempo and keep Jennings off the field. SMU’s passing attack, directed by Jennings, will try to stretch the Cavaliers vertically and create space for Raphael and McFall.
Interstat’s game simulator projects SMU 34, Virginia 25. SMU is installed as a 9.5-point favorite, and the over/under is 52.
