Stonehill at Sacred Heart
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — Sacred Heart will host Stonehill on Saturday in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Campus Field. The Pioneers (2-3) carry momentum into the matchup after winning their past two games, most recently a 24-16 victory at Maine. The Skyhawks (1-4) are trying to halt a three-game losing streak and find consistency on offense.
Sacred Heart’s recent surge has been fueled by quarterback Poochie Snyder, a dual-threat player who powers the offense. In the win at Maine, Snyder threw for 207 yards and ran for 73 yards while accounting for two touchdowns. He also passed for 95 yards and ran for 67 yards with a touchdown against New Hampshire, and he totaled three touchdowns in a narrow loss at Elon. Snyder’s ability to extend plays with his legs could test a Stonehill defense that has allowed at least 35 points in each of its past three games.
Stonehill will look to quarterback Jack O’Connell to spark its offense. O’Connell passed for 117 yards and a touchdown in the Skyhawks’ most recent game, a loss at Ohio. He also threw for 69 yards and a touchdown in a loss at Massachusetts. Stonehill’s most recent victory came against New Haven, when the Skyhawks relied on a balanced effort to secure a 21-3 road win. Since then, Stonehill has faced a difficult stretch against higher-level opponents, including Massachusetts and Ohio.
The Skyhawks will need to protect O’Connell and generate enough rushing production to keep Sacred Heart’s offense off the field. Stonehill has struggled to sustain drives in recent weeks, scoring seven points against Ohio and 14 against Massachusetts. Sacred Heart, meanwhile, has found rhythm behind Snyder and an offense that has scored at least 20 points in each of its past two games.
Sacred Heart’s defense will focus on limiting big plays and forcing Stonehill into long down-and-distance situations. The Pioneers have allowed 16 points or fewer in each of their past two games, both wins. Stonehill’s defense will try to contain Snyder and prevent him from making plays outside the pocket. The Skyhawks will also aim to limit explosive plays and keep Sacred Heart’s offense behind the chains. Sacred Heart will seek to establish an early lead and pressure Stonehill’s offense.
After this game, Stonehill is scheduled to host Duquesne, and Sacred Heart will host Hampton. Both teams will return to action next. The matchup at Campus Field offers Sacred Heart a chance to reach .500, while Stonehill seeks its second win of the season.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Sacred Heart 39, Stonehill 21.
