Passini powers Butler past San Diego in home rout
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — Butler used a balanced offensive attack and a punishing ground game to defeat visiting San Diego 41-10 in an NCAA Football Championship Division game Saturday at Saint Vincent Field. The announced attendance was 3,909. Butler improved to 5-1 on the season, while San Diego fell to 2-4. The Bulldogs scored in every quarter and never trailed after an early touchdown. Gabe Passini led Butler with a standout all-around performance, and the Bulldogs defense limited San Diego’s passing game enough to keep the Toreros from mounting a comeback. San Diego moved the ball through the air but struggled to finish drives, managing only a field goal and a late touchdown. Butler’s home victory continued its strong start to the season and handed San Diego another road setback.
Butler set the tone in the first quarter when Sam Manna broke free for a 73-yard rushing touchdown with 9:53 remaining. Beck Janki’s extra point gave the Bulldogs an early lead. San Diego answered later in the quarter when Emiliano Salazar made a 44-yard field goal with 4:51 left. Butler added to its advantage when Janki connected on a 34-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in the opening period. In the second quarter, Desmin Jackson rushed right for a 22-yard touchdown with 12:50 left, and Janki’s kick made it a two-score game. San Diego had a chance to cut into the deficit in the third quarter, but Salazar missed a 36-yard field goal attempt with 11:48 remaining. Butler then pulled away as Passini scored on a 10-yard run with 8:50 left in the third quarter and added a 4-yard rushing touchdown with 7:14 remaining. In the fourth quarter, San Diego got a 30-yard touchdown pass from Nankil to Mbakwe, and Passini answered with a 9-yard scoring run with 10:33 left. The Bulldogs kept pressure on San Diego throughout the second half, and their special teams and defense prevented the Toreros from establishing consistent field position.
Passini, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound quarterback from Middleton, Wis., finished with 11 completions on 16 attempts for 217 yards. He also ran 12 times for 56 yards, punted once for 16 yards and scored three touchdowns. His ability to hurt San Diego with both his arm and his legs kept Butler’s offense on schedule. Passini’s three rushing scores came during a stretch when Butler turned a comfortable lead into a rout. He was the game’s top star, directing an offense that produced 41 points and more than enough support for the Bulldogs defense. Butler also got a strong day from its backfield, as Manna and Jackson combined to control the clock and keep San Diego’s offense off the field. Passini’s passing total helped open running lanes, and his short-yardage runs finished drives. The Bulldogs’ offense converted key opportunities and avoided the turnovers that could have allowed San Diego back into the game.
Manna led Butler’s rushing attack with nine carries for 151 yards and one touchdown, plus one catch for 8 yards. Jackson added nine carries for 44 yards and one touchdown. Michael Nix was Butler’s top receiving threat with three catches for 113 yards. Jonny Manor had one catch for 60 yards, Nick Munson caught three passes for 21 yards, Gage Goralski had one reception for 11 yards, Blake Matthews had one catch for 5 yards, and Drew Sullivan finished with one reception for minus 1 yard. Zac Willingham-Davis ran twice for 13 yards, while Jack Weybright had two carries for 1 yard. Michael Dellumo returned two kickoffs for 36 yards. Sam Taglia punted three times for 97 yards. Defensively, Mason Armstrong made eight tackles, Andrew Lieske had seven, Kameron Armstrong finished with six, Dantu Gardner Jr. had five, and Tristan Johnson added one tackle. The Bulldogs’ defense bent at times but did not break, keeping San Diego out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
San Diego’s offense was led by Dom Nankil, who completed 28 of 42 passes for 295 yards and one touchdown. Elijah Taylor caught six passes for 100 yards, Cole Monach had five receptions for 79 yards, and Yosei Takahashi caught six passes for 34 yards while adding a 10-yard punt return. Omar Mbakwe carried nine times for 12 yards, caught two passes for 34 yards, made one tackle and scored one touchdown. Luke Morgan had two catches for 17 yards, Christopher Hall had two catches for 11 yards, and Zamar Reese ran four times for 9 yards while catching three passes for 11 yards. Adam Criter ran seven times for 10 yards and caught one pass for 6 yards. Nathan Brown had one reception for minus 3 yards. Major Givens returned two kickoffs for 31 yards, and Salazar punted three times for 140 yards. San Diego moved the chains at times, but Butler’s defense consistently tightened near the goal line. The Toreros’ longest scoring drive ended with Mbakwe’s 30-yard touchdown catch from Nankil in the fourth quarter. San Diego also benefited from a face-mask penalty on Butler during that drive, but the Toreros could not build on the score.
San Diego’s defense received five tackles each from Ian Harrison, Cayden Gibson and David Loch. Dillon Kellner, Tim Hays, Jae’Von Reels and Ruben Lopez each made four tackles. Hays also recorded one quarterback hurry. Sean Scheck had three tackles and one sack, while Nick Felago finished with three tackles. CJ Castille and Josiah Estes each had two tackles. Joe Bolder, Dylan Eads, River Abenroth, Shaun Aletor and Cade Smith each made one tackle. The Toreros struggled to contain Butler’s rushing attack, especially Manna’s 73-yard scoring run and Passini’s red-zone carries. San Diego’s defensive front was tested throughout the afternoon, and Butler’s offensive line created enough space for the Bulldogs to average well over five yards per carry on several key attempts. The visitors also had trouble finishing drives on offense, settling for a field goal and missing another attempt. Butler’s ability to score touchdowns instead of field goals made the difference.
The game was played at Saint Vincent Field in Indianapolis, Ind. Butler’s victory marked its fifth win in six games this season. San Diego, meanwhile, continued a difficult stretch that has included several road challenges. Earlier this season, San Diego defeated Davidson and lost to Saint Thomas, Cal Poly, Idaho State and UC Davis. Butler had beaten Valparaiso, Chicago State and Franklin, lost to Montana State and defeated Georgetown of Kentucky. Both teams are scheduled to return to action. San Diego is set to host Valparaiso, while Butler is set to host Dayton. The Bulldogs will look to build on a performance that featured efficient passing, explosive rushing and timely defense. The Toreros will aim to correct their red-zone issues and generate more consistency on the ground. The Bulldogs’ defense held San Diego to 10 points, its lowest output of the season. Butler’s offense finished with 41 points.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Butler 44, San Diego 35. Interstat’s ELO system gave Butler a 58 percent probability to win. Butler had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 2.5. The over/under line was 57.5, and the teams combined for 51 points.
