Pennington powers Northern Arizona past Montana in thriller
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Interstat) — Ty Pennington accounted for six touchdowns and Northern Arizona held off a late Montana push for a 49-44 victory on Saturday in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. An announced crowd of 8,413 watched the Lumberjacks improve to 5-2 overall and drop the Grizzlies to 5-2. The game featured seven Northern Arizona touchdowns, a 100-yard kickoff return and a safety in the final seconds that made the final margin five points. Northern Arizona never fully separated until the closing minutes, but Pennington’s versatility and a handful of timely defensive plays proved enough.
Pennington was the central figure for Northern Arizona. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound quarterback completed 26 of 38 passes for 322 yards and one touchdown, rushed 16 times for 52 yards and four scores, and caught a 7-yard touchdown pass. His ability to hurt Montana through the air, on the ground and even as a receiver kept the Lumberjacks moving whenever the Grizzlies threatened. Pennington scored on runs of 4, 3, 1 and 5 yards, and he hauled in a 7-yard scoring pass from Joey Stout in the third quarter. The performance followed his recent outing against Idaho State, when he passed for 252 yards and rushed for 49 yards in a Northern Arizona win.
Stout also played a key role in the Northern Arizona attack. He completed his only pass attempt for 7 yards and a touchdown to Pennington, caught four passes for 80 yards and returned three punts for 33 yards. Jeter Purdy added three receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Myseth Currie caught six passes for 57 yards. Nassim Isaac added a 30-yard reception. Jon Wilson rushed five times for 41 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards, and Quran Gossett carried five times for 22 yards. Lindsey Graves supplied one of the game’s biggest moments with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He finished with two kickoff returns for 119 yards and one score.
Montana answered with a productive passing game of its own. Keali’i Ah Yat completed 29 of 39 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns and added 11 rushing yards on four carries. Landon Ransom-Goelz was his top target, catching seven passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Lekeldrick Bridges also caught seven passes for 79 yards and a score. Reese Brooks had three receptions for 39 yards, and Brooks Davis added three catches for 38 yards. Eli Gillman scored on a 1-yard run and later caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ah Yat. Jo Silver made a 30-yard field goal early and added a 35-yard field goal in the final minutes. Titus Rohrer caught a 7-yard pass, and Ian Finch had a 6-yard reception.
The teams traded momentum throughout. Montana struck first when Eli Gillman finished a short drive with a 1-yard plunge with 8:48 left in the first quarter. Silver’s 30-yard field goal with 14:57 remaining in the second quarter stretched the Grizzlies’ early advantage. Northern Arizona responded behind Pennington, who scored on a 4-yard run with 12:45 left in the second quarter and then a 3-yard run with 5:59 remaining before halftime. The lead changed hands as both offenses found room. Stout’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Pennington on a trick play gave Northern Arizona another score with 6:49 left in the third quarter, and Pennington’s 1-yard run with 3:35 remaining in the third added to the margin.
Montana refused to fade. Ah Yat connected with Ransom-Goelz and Bridges for touchdowns, and the Grizzlies used Silver’s leg to stay within reach. A potential Montana touchdown in the fourth quarter was wiped out by a holding penalty with 13:24 remaining. Northern Arizona capitalized soon after when Graves raced 100 yards on the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown with 13:06 left. Montana again answered when Ah Yat found Eli Gillman for a 2-yard score with 9:18 remaining, trimming the deficit. Another Ah Yat touchdown pass was nullified by pass interference with 1:47 left, forcing Montana to settle for Silver’s 35-yard field goal with 1:34 remaining.
Pennington’s fourth rushing touchdown, a 5-yard run with 3:16 remaining, gave Northern Arizona the cushion it needed. Montana added Silver’s field goal and then a safety with six seconds left when Northern Arizona was tackled in its own end zone on a kneel-down play. The safety cut the final margin to five points, but the Lumberjacks had already secured the victory. Northern Arizona finished with 49 points and Montana closed with 44.
Northern Arizona’s defense made enough plays to complement Pennington. Jahaad Fort recorded 11 tackles, Shoes Brinkley had eight tackles and Shahid Wilson finished with seven tackles and an interception. Bryson Torrie, Ammon Allen, Braylon Singleton and Malaki Te’o each added four tackles. Noble Young-Blackgoat had five tackles. Devin Murphy contributed two tackles, one sack and one quarterback hurry, while Jordan Pigram had three tackles and one quarterback hurry. Braeden Kaczmarek also recorded a quarterback hurry. The Lumberjacks’ secondary was tested often by Ah Yat and the Montana passing game, but the interception and several timely stops helped Northern Arizona protect its lead.
Montana’s defense was led by Nai Mose, who made 10 tackles. Devin Dunn added eight tackles, while Tanner Huff and Chris Johnson II each had seven. Braeden Orlandi finished with five tackles, and Tanner Williams had four. Ian Finch recorded one tackle to go with his 6-yard reception. The Grizzlies struggled to contain Pennington on the ground, especially near the goal line, and that proved to be the difference in a game that featured little defensive comfort for either side.
The result moved both teams to 5-2. Northern Arizona built on a recent win over Idaho State, while Montana had entered after a home victory over Northern Colorado. The Lumberjacks will next host Portland State. Montana will return home to face Idaho. The Grizzlies will then play at Eastern Washington, while Northern Arizona will visit Southern Utah.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Montana 53, Northern Arizona 43 before kickoff. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Montana with a 68.6 percent probability to win, even though Northern Arizona had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -9.5. The total score of 93 and an over/under line of 64.5 were part of the pregame numbers.
