North Carolina at Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — North Carolina will visit Pittsburgh on Saturday for an NCAA Football Bowl Division game at Acrisure Stadium. The Tar Heels enter at 2-2, while the Panthers are 5-0. Pittsburgh will look to remain unbeaten at home, and North Carolina will seek a road win against a team that has scored at a high rate.
North Carolina’s offense will be led by quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., a player to watch. In the Tar Heels’ most recent outing, a 37-26 loss to Notre Dame, Edwards threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 13 yards. Earlier at Clemson, he threw for 135 yards and one touchdown and ran for 14 yards. North Carolina also got production from running backs Benjamin Hall, who ran for 36 yards against Notre Dame, and Jaylen McGill, who added 15 yards rushing and a tackle.
The Tar Heels have shown some balance. They beat East Tennessee State 35-3 and opened the season with a 15-10 win at Texas Christian. Their other loss came at Clemson, 28-20. North Carolina will need efficient play from Edwards and support from its running game to keep pace in a challenging road environment.
Pittsburgh counters with quarterback Mason Heintschel, who has been a steadying presence for the Panthers. In Pittsburgh’s most recent game, a 35-33 win at Virginia Tech, Heintschel threw for 113 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 2 yards. Against Bucknell, he passed for 403 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 33 yards. Against Syracuse, he threw for 123 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 41 yards. The Panthers also have received contributions from Holden Geriner, who threw for 78 yards and a touchdown against Virginia Tech, and Ja’Kyrian Turner, who ran for 65 yards and caught six passes for 35 yards and a score in that game.
Pittsburgh has been strong throughout the season. The Panthers beat Bucknell 59-0, Syracuse 27-13, UCF 12-7 and Miami (Ohio) 59-14. Their defense has allowed 14 points or fewer in four of five games, while the offense has topped 50 points twice. That combination has helped Pittsburgh build its undefeated record.
North Carolina’s schedule will continue with a game at Duke. Pittsburgh will next play at Boston College. For now, both teams will focus on a matchup that could shape momentum. The Tar Heels want to avoid falling below .500, and the Panthers aim to protect their perfect start.
Interstat’s game simulator is projecting a final score of Pittsburgh 41, North Carolina 23. North Carolina has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +3.5. The over/under for this game is 47.5.
