Arizona rides Fifita, big plays to win at West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Interstat) — Arizona used a fast start, a productive passing game and a timely defensive score to defeat West Virginia 52-31 in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game on Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Wildcats improved to 5-1, while the Mountaineers fell to 3-3. An announced crowd of 50,121 watched Arizona pull away in the second half after West Virginia had stayed within reach. Noah Fifita led the Wildcats at quarterback, throwing for 341 yards and three touchdowns, and Arizona also got a fumble return for a touchdown from Lee Molette III. West Virginia moved the ball effectively at times behind Michael Hawkins Jr. and Cam Cook, but the Mountaineers could not keep pace once Arizona found its rhythm in the fourth quarter.

Arizona’s defense made enough plays to support the offense. Cam Chapa led the Wildcats with 15 tackles. Taye Brown and Quinn Olson each recorded nine tackles. Lee Molette III had seven tackles and returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown after West Virginia’s Cam Cook lost the ball in the first quarter. Tre Smith added five tackles, while Malcolm Hartzog Jr. and Jay’Vion Cole each finished with four. Prince Williams recorded one quarterback hurry. The defensive score came shortly after Arizona had a touchdown pass nullified by a holding penalty, helping the Wildcats maintain early momentum. Chase Ridley’s punting and Salgado-Medina’s kicking also helped Arizona manage field position. Arizona’s defensive front also pressured West Virginia’s quarterbacks at key moments.
West Virginia’s defense spread its production across the roster. Isaiah Patterson, Andrew Powdrell, Geimere Latimer II, Keyshawn Robinson, Kamari Wilson and Matt Sieg each recorded three tackles. Despite those efforts, Arizona’s big plays in the passing game and on the ground kept the Mountaineers from completing a comeback.

Arizona appeared to answer when Fifita hit Mizell for a 4-yard touchdown, but the play was nullified by a holding penalty. On the next snap, Fifita found Mizell again for a 14-yard touchdown, and Salgado-Medina added the extra point. Arizona then added a defensive touchdown when Cam Cook fumbled and Molette recovered the ball and returned it 32 yards for a score. That sequence helped the Wildcats take control before West Virginia responded.
In the second quarter, Hawkins scored on a 3-yard run for West Virginia. Arizona answered with Salgado-Medina’s 44-yard field goal. Cook then broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run, keeping the Mountaineers close. Arizona responded before halftime when Quincy Craig raced 40 yards for a touchdown. The back-and-forth stretch left the Wildcats with a narrow lead at the break, but Arizona’s offense continued to produce explosive plays after halftime.
Arizona extended its lead in the third quarter on K. Reescano’s 8-yard touchdown run. West Virginia answered with Amari Latimer’s 2-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats then regained separation when Fifita connected with Mizell for a 72-yard touchdown. The Wildcats added another score on Antwan Roberts Jr.’s 30-yard touchdown run. Salgado-Medina later missed a 49-yard field goal attempt, but the Wildcats had already secured the final margin.
