Bison blank Cowboys behind Hayes, stifling defense
FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — North Dakota State defeated Wyoming 28-0 in a NCAA Football Championship Division game Saturday at the Fargodome. The Bison improved to 5-0 with a commanding home performance, while the Cowboys fell to 2-3. North Dakota State scored in every quarter and kept Wyoming off the scoreboard, using a productive offense and a defense that repeatedly disrupted the Cowboys. The Bison set the tone early and never allowed Wyoming to establish rhythm. Nathan Hayes led the North Dakota State attack, and the Bison defense delivered stops and takeaways when Wyoming tried to climb back into the game. The victory extended North Dakota State’s unbeaten start and handed Wyoming its third loss of the season. The game was played indoors at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., where the Bison controlled field position and possession. The Cowboys never found an answer on either side of the ball after the opening minutes.
Hayes, a quarterback from West Chicago, Ill., finished with 187 passing yards, 79 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He completed 14 of 25 passes and carried 10 times, repeatedly hurting Wyoming with his legs. Hayes scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter and added a 14-yard run in the second quarter. Drew Klein kicked field goals of 31 and 37 yards. DJ Scott added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Jackson Williams converted a two-point rush after that score. Klein’s extra points and field goals helped North Dakota State pull away. The Bison also got production from Brady Wavrunek, who ran three times for 17 yards and caught one pass for 9 yards, and Barry Kpeenu, who carried five times for 15 yards. Mekhi Collins caught three passes for 30 yards, while Reis Kessel had two catches for 44 yards. Luke Kokat added a 12-yard reception, Logan Conklin had a 6-yard catch, and Jeremiah Patterson had a 5-yard reception. Aaron Bickerton punted four times for 201 yards. Drew Klein handled kicking duties and contributed to the scoring. North Dakota State’s offense mixed runs and short passes, keeping Wyoming off balance and converting key opportunities into points.
North Dakota State’s defense smothered Wyoming throughout. Donovan Woolen led the unit with nine tackles, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one interception. Gavin Sell added eight tackles, while Darius Givance had seven. Kelton McCaslin recorded three tackles, 1.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry. Marion Moore finished with three tackles. Ray James Jr. had two tackles and one quarterback hurry. Will Steil, Keith Williams, Matthew Stenbroten, Taylen Eady, Jaylin Crumby, Logan Larson, DJ Voltz and Peder Haugo each contributed two tackles. Keenan Wilson had one tackle and one quarterback hurry. Victor Isele had one tackle and half a sack. Anthony Okes, Jaylen Archibald, Zach Vanderpool, Obald Niyonkuru, Alex Elliott, Noah Taylor, Najee Nelson and John Gores each had one tackle. The Bison limited Wyoming’s passing game and made the Cowboys work for every yard. North Dakota State’s pressure up front forced hurried throws and closed running lanes. Woolen’s interception and McCaslin’s sacks were among the biggest plays for a defense that never let Wyoming reach the end zone.
Wyoming quarterback Tyler Hughes completed 5 of 14 passes for 52 yards and ran 12 times for 37 yards. He also made one tackle. Charlie Coenen caught one pass for 16 yards and returned two punts for 20 yards. Jake Wilson had a 14-yard reception. Tyler Siddons caught one pass for 8 yards. Deion DeBlanc had a 2-yard reception. Nico Hamilton ran three times for 9 yards, and Landon Sims carried once for 5 yards. Defensively for Wyoming, Ethan Stuhlsatz and Steven Perez each made 10 tackles. Stuhlsatz also had one quarterback hurry. Jones Thomas added seven tackles. Desman Hearns and Dante Drake each had five tackles, with Drake adding one quarterback hurry. Dainsus Miller, Jayden Williams and Ian Bell each finished with three tackles, and Williams recorded one sack. Jack Dunkley had three tackles. The Cowboys defense kept competing, but the offense could not convert drives into points. Wyoming’s best chances came through short completions and occasional runs, but North Dakota State’s defense tightened in the red zone and on third down.
Wyoming entered the game after a win over Hawaii and losses to Central Michigan and Colorado State earlier this season, along with a victory over Northern Colorado. North Dakota State had opened its season with wins over Jacksonville State, Fordham, Air Force and Sacramento State. The Bison’s perfect record now stands at five wins and no losses, while Wyoming sits at two wins and three losses. Wyoming’s upcoming schedule includes a trip to San Jose State, home games against Northern Illinois, Air Force, New Mexico and Connecticut, and road games at UNLV and UTEP. North Dakota State is set to visit UNLV, host Nevada, travel to New Mexico, host UTEP, visit Hawaii, host Northern Illinois and visit San Jose State. Those matchups will test whether the Bison can maintain their unbeaten run and whether the Cowboys can recover from the shutout loss. Wyoming will look to regroup after a difficult road trip, while North Dakota State will aim to keep its momentum rolling.
