Purdue Holds Off Illinois Behind Browne and Timely Defense
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — Purdue used a balanced passing attack, a pair of timely field goals and a late defensive stand to defeat Illinois 24-17 in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game at Gies Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Boilermakers improved to 2-3 overall, while the Fighting Illini also moved to 2-3.
Purdue struck first in the opening quarter when Jacobo Echeverria Lozano connected on a 30-yard field goal with 6:48 remaining. The kick gave the Boilermakers a 3-0 lead. Illinois had a chance to answer early in the second quarter, but Ethan Moczulski missed a 32-yard field goal attempt with 14:57 left. The Boilermakers extended their lead at 10:11 of the second when Lozano made a 34-yard field goal. Purdue then found the end zone at 4:16 of the second. Ryan Browne completed a deep left pass to Tra’Mar Harris, who caught the ball at the Illinois goal line and finished a 21-yard touchdown. Lozano’s extra point made it 13-0. Purdue’s first-half passing game kept Illinois off balance, and Browne spread the ball to multiple receivers before the break.
Illinois responded just before halftime. Katin Houser completed a short right pass to Collin Dixon for a 7-yard touchdown with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Moczulski’s kick cut the Purdue lead to 13-7. The score gave the Fighting Illini momentum heading into the locker room, but Purdue’s defense continued to make key stops in the second half.
In the third quarter, Purdue added to its advantage when Lozano made a 33-yard field goal with 6:05 remaining. The kick made it 16-7 and capped a possession that chewed clock and forced Illinois to play from behind. Illinois looked as if it might answer early in the fourth quarter when Houser connected with Ty Robinson on a deep left pass for a 34-yard touchdown, but the play was nullified by an Illinois holding penalty. Instead of six points, the Fighting Illini had to settle for a long field goal attempt. Moczulski delivered from 54 yards with 8:15 remaining, bringing Illinois to 16-10. The miss on the nullified touchdown loomed large as Illinois had to settle for three points on that possession.
Purdue answered with a decisive drive. Antonio Harris rushed up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown with 4:29 remaining. The previous play was reviewed for whether the runner broke the plane, and the call was upheld. Ryan Browne then rushed successfully for a 2-point conversion, extending the Boilermakers’ lead to 24-10. The sequence gave Purdue the cushion it needed and forced Illinois into a late desperation mode.
Illinois did not quit. With 1:26 remaining, Houser completed a short right pass to Robinson for a 2-yard touchdown. Moczulski added the extra point, trimming the deficit to 24-17. Purdue recovered the ensuing kickoff and managed the clock from there, securing the road victory. The Boilermakers’ defense prevented Illinois from completing a final comeback. Purdue ran out the remaining time after the kickoff, and Illinois could not force a turnover or a quick stop.
