Reed, Aggies roll past Razorbacks at Kyle Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — Marcel Reed threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Texas A&M defeated Arkansas 34-7 on Saturday at Kyle Field in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game. The Aggies improved to 3-2 with the home victory. The Razorbacks, the visiting team, dropped to 2-3.
Reed, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback from Nashville, Tenn., completed 13 of 19 passes for 170 yards and carried nine times for 66 yards and one touchdown. He set the tone for an offense that scored in every quarter and never let Arkansas settle into a rhythm. In his previous outing, Reed completed 10 of 26 passes for 106 yards in a loss to LSU. KJ Jackson, Arkansas’ 6-foot-4, 219-pound quarterback, completed 13 of 25 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown. He also ran four times for six yards. Jackson’s touchdown pass went to Chris Marshall for 26 yards in the first quarter.
Marshall, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver, finished with seven catches for 76 yards and the Razorbacks’ only touchdown. Arkansas could not generate much else through the air, and its ground game produced only in spurts. Sutton Smith, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back, ran six times for 41 yards, caught five passes for 24 yards and returned one punt for minus-1 yard. Braylen Russell, a 6-foot-1, 253-pound running back, carried seven times for 40 yards. Cam Settles ran four times for 11 yards. Jasper Parker had one carry for five yards. Donovan Faupel caught one pass for 11 yards.
Texas A&M’s defense made the difference after the opening quarter. Dalton Brooks, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back, recorded three tackles and an interception. Punter Tyler White, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound specialist, punted twice for 84 yards. KJ Edwards, a 5-foot-10, 197-pound running back, rushed 11 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Rueben Owens II added 14 carries for 43 yards and one catch for six yards. Carsyn Baker ran 12 times for 26 yards and a touchdown. TK Norman had one run for 16 yards and three catches for 36 yards. DeDe Murray carried twice for 14 yards.
The Aggies also spread the ball around in the passing game. Kiotti Armstrong, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound tight end, caught one pass for 54 yards. Isaiah Horton had two receptions for 35 yards. Ashton Bethel-Roman caught three passes for 19 yards. Mario Craver had one catch for 10 yards and returned one punt for no gain. Houston Thomas added two catches for 10 yards. David Olano handled the kicking duties for Texas A&M and made multiple field goals.
Texas A&M opened the scoring when Baker ran 2 yards for a touchdown. Edwards followed with a 20-yard scoring run. Arkansas answered late in the first quarter when Jackson connected with Marshall for 26 yards. In the second quarter, Max Gilbert missed a 55-yard field goal for Arkansas. A 27-yard field goal attempt by Olano was nullified by a penalty. Reed then scored on a 1-yard run, and Olano made a 57-yard field goal before halftime. Edwards added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Olano capped the scoring with a 50-yard field goal in the fourth.
The defensive effort for Texas A&M included six tackles each from Tawfiq Byard and Daymion Sanford. Julio Humphrey and Landon Rink each made four tackles. CJ Mims recorded three tackles and one quarterback hurry. Marco Jones had one tackle and one sack. Anto Saka contributed one tackle and two quarterback hurries. Marcus Ratcliffe and Noah Mikhail each had three tackles. Jordan Shaw made two tackles. T.J. Searcy, Angelo McCullom, Ray Coney, Chance Collins, Ryan Henderson, Bravion Rogers, Brandon Davis-Swain, Jordan Lockhart and DJ Hicks each finished with one tackle.
Arkansas was led by Ben Bogle, who made 16 tackles. Khmori House added 11 tackles, and Ja’Quavion Smith had nine. Christian Harrison and Carter Stoutmire each finished with six tackles. Shelton Lewis made four tackles. Miguel Mitchell, La’khi Roland, Tay Lockett and David Oke each had three tackles. The Razorbacks’ defense kept the game from becoming more lopsided for a while, but the offense could not capitalize on enough possessions.
Texas A&M finished with a consistent offensive approach. Reed spread the ball to Armstrong, Horton, Bethel-Roman, Craver and Thomas, while the running backs combined for a productive afternoon. Edwards averaged six yards per carry on his 11 attempts. Owens averaged more than three yards per carry. Baker handled short-yardage work and found the end zone. The Aggies did not need a late surge because their defense kept Arkansas out of the end zone after the first quarter. Arkansas’ only points came on Jackson’s touchdown pass to Marshall, and the Razorbacks were blanked the rest of the way. Gilbert’s missed 55-yard field goal in the second quarter ended one scoring opportunity. The Razorbacks also saw a promising drive disrupted by Brooks’ interception. Texas A&M’s special teams added a steady contribution from White, who flipped field position with two punts totaling 84 yards. Olano made field goals from 57 and 50 yards and added extra points. The Aggies’ defense recorded a sack and several quarterback hurries. Arkansas’ defense, led by Bogle’s 16 tackles, kept the Razorbacks within striking distance for a while, but the offense could not close the gap.
Arkansas entered the game after a home win over Tulsa and a home win over North Alabama, with losses to Georgia and Utah earlier in the season. Texas A&M had beaten Missouri State and Arizona State before falling to Kentucky and LSU. The Aggies will try to build on the home victory in their next game. Arkansas will look to regroup in its next matchup. Both teams return to conference play in their upcoming schedules.
