McNeese State at LSU

BATON ROUGE (Interstat) — McNeese State will visit LSU on Saturday for an NCAA Football Bowl Division game at Tiger Stadium, with the Cowboys looking to build on a dramatic win and the Tigers seeking to keep momentum after a dominant performance.

McNeese State enters at 2-3. The Cowboys beat Texas A&M-Commerce 27-24 in their most recent game, getting a balanced effort from quarterback Jake Strong and the run game. Strong completed 17 of 27 passes for 202 yards, ran nine times for 34 yards and scored one touchdown. Omiri Wiggins added 116 rushing yards on 12 carries and caught three passes for 46 yards with one touchdown. Tre’Vonte Citizen contributed 49 rushing yards on 10 attempts. Strong, the player to watch for McNeese State, also passed for 29 yards and ran for nine yards in a loss to New Haven earlier this season.

LSU enters at 3-1 and is coming off a 35-6 win over Texas A&M. Quarterback Sam Leavitt, the Tigers’ player to watch, completed 17 of 23 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns while adding 22 rushing yards on five carries. Landen Clark ran nine times for 41 yards and two touchdowns, and Dilin Jones rushed 14 times for 63 yards, caught three passes for 22 yards and scored once. Leavitt has been productive throughout the season, including a 344-yard passing game against Louisiana Tech and a 230-yard passing, 113-yard rushing effort against Clemson.

The Tigers also earned wins over Clemson and Louisiana Tech before a loss at Ole Miss. McNeese State has a win over Texas Wesleyan and losses to Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton State and New Haven. The matchup will test McNeese State’s ability to contain LSU’s offense and handle the environment at Tiger Stadium. The Cowboys have shown they can move the ball through Strong and a backfield that includes Wiggins and Citizen. LSU has multiple playmakers around Leavitt, and its defense will aim to limit explosive plays.

After this game, McNeese State is scheduled to visit Northwestern State next, before continuing its conference slate. LSU is set to visit Kentucky, then return home to face Mississippi State, with games against Auburn, Alabama, Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas ahead.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of LSU 35, McNeese State 8. McNeese State has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +52.5, and the over/under for the game is 61.5.
