The visiting Fightin’ Camels improved to 4-1, while the home Pirates fell to 1-4. Campbell scored seven points in the first quarter, 31 in the second and six in the fourth. Hampton scored 10 in the first, seven in the third and three in the fourth. The result gave Campbell its fourth win in five games this season.

Campbell entered the game having won three of its previous four contests, including a 42-14 victory over North Carolina A&T. The Fightin’ Camels had also defeated Western Carolina and East Tennessee State, while their only loss came at Florida. Hampton entered after losses to Norfolk State, Bryant and Maryland, but the Pirates had opened the season with a 45-0 win over Virginia Lynchburg. Both teams were looking for momentum in the NCAA Football Championship Division schedule.
