Oklahoma State at West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Interstat) — Oklahoma State will visit West Virginia on Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game. The Cowboys enter with a 2-1 record. The Mountaineers are 3-0. The forecast at game time calls for 76 degrees in Morgantown, W.Va.
West Virginia will try to remain unbeaten behind quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., a dual-threat player to watch. In the Mountaineers’ most recent game, a 38-27 win at Virginia, Hawkins passed for 190 yards and rushed for 123 yards while producing multiple touchdowns. Cam Cook added 123 rushing yards on 30 carries, and DJ Epps caught three passes for 92 yards and two scores. West Virginia also has wins over Tennessee-Martin, 52-7, and Coastal Carolina, 31-24.
Oklahoma State counters with quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who has sparked a high-scoring offense. In a 59-0 win over Murray State, Mestemaker completed 20 of 22 passes for 324 yards and five touchdowns. He also delivered a strong performance in a 39-31 win over Oregon. Broderick Vehrs and Caleb Hawkins contributed against Murray State, with Hawkins rushing for 72 yards on 11 carries and adding three receptions for 16 yards. The Cowboys opened with a 24-10 loss at Tulsa before beating Oregon and Murray State.
The matchup features contrasting momentum. West Virginia has scored at least 31 points in each of its first three games and has been effective on the ground with Hawkins and Cook. Oklahoma State has scored 39 and 59 points in its past two games after being held to 10 in the opener. Mestemaker’s accuracy and command will test a West Virginia defense that has allowed 27 points only once this season. The Mountaineers’ defense will need to limit big plays and force Oklahoma State into longer possessions. The Cowboys will need balance from their running game to complement Mestemaker and keep West Virginia’s defense honest. Oklahoma State also must protect the football and avoid long third downs on the road.
Oklahoma State’s schedule after this game includes UCF, Houston, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Arizona State and Kansas. West Virginia’s upcoming slate includes Iowa State, Arizona, Cincinnati, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, Kansas, Houston and Utah. Milan Puskar Stadium is expected to be a factor as West Virginia tries to protect its home field and stay perfect.
Interstat’s game simulator projects West Virginia to win 33-25. Interstat’s ELO system gives West Virginia a 94.2 percent probability to win. Oklahoma State has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +1.5, and the over/under for the game is 61.5.
