Houston at Georgia Southern
STATESBORO, GA. (Interstat) — Houston will try to get back in the win column when the Cougars visit Georgia Southern on Saturday in an NCAA Football Bowl Division game at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. The forecast for game time calls for 75°F.
Houston enters at 2-1 after a 28-26 loss at Texas Tech in its most recent game. The Cougars opened the season with a 33-20 win over Oregon State and followed with a 77-6 rout of Southern. Georgia Southern is 1-2 and comes off a 31-27 loss at Jacksonville State. The Eagles beat Charleston Southern 31-0 before a 22-7 loss at Clemson.
Houston quarterback Conner Weigman is the player to watch. In the loss at Texas Tech, Weigman completed 27 of 38 passes for 282 yards and rushed 13 times for 56 yards while accounting for three touchdowns. He also had three touchdowns in a 77-6 win over Southern. He has been central to the Cougars’ offense throughout the early season, including a 305-yard passing performance against Oregon State.
Makhi Hughes also gave Houston production in the Texas Tech game, running 15 times for 71 yards and catching two passes for 28 yards. Re’Shaun Sanford II added five carries for 30 yards and five receptions for 50 yards. Their ability to complement Weigman could be important against a Georgia Southern defense that has allowed 22 points to Clemson and 31 to Jacksonville State but held Charleston Southern scoreless.
Georgia Southern will look to use home-field advantage as it tries to snap a two-game losing streak. The Eagles have lost two straight, but a home matchup against a Bowl Division opponent offers a chance to steady the season. Houston, meanwhile, will seek to avoid a second consecutive loss and maintain momentum from its 2-1 start.
The Cougars and Eagles are meeting in a nonconference matchup. Houston has scored at least 26 points in every game this season, while Georgia Southern has been held to 27 points or fewer in its two losses. Georgia Southern’s defense will need to contain Weigman and limit explosive plays, while Houston’s defense must handle the Eagles’ offense and avoid giving up long drives. Special teams and turnovers could swing the game. Both teams will also aim to protect the football and convert scoring chances in a matchup that could be decided in the fourth quarter.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Georgia Southern to win 38-34. Interstat’s ELO system gives Houston a 61.3 percent probability to win. Georgia Southern has been installed as a 17.5-point pregame favorite, and the over/under is 56.5.
