Fordham ground game powers road win over William & Mary
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Fordham rode a punishing rushing attack and timely passing Saturday to a 52-27 victory over William & Mary in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Walter J. Zable Stadium at Cary Field. The visiting Rams scored in every quarter, controlled the line of scrimmage and pulled away after halftime to secure their first win of the season. Fordham improved to 1-3, while William & Mary dropped to 2-2.
Fordham set the tone early behind quarterback Gunnar Smith, who completed 12 of 21 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns and added 41 rushing yards on seven carries. Smith found KJ Reed for an 18-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Jamell James followed with a 5-yard scoring run later in the opening period. Smith then connected with John Morris for a 10-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, pushing the Rams’ advantage before the Tribe could settle in.
William & Mary responded with a big play when Andrew King broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. King finished with 16 carries for 122 yards and one score, and he also caught two passes for 29 yards. The Tribe’s momentum was short-lived, however, as Fordham answered before halftime. Smith found Nodin Tracy for a 14-yard touchdown with 32 seconds left in the second quarter. Tracy finished with three receptions for 35 yards and a score while also making two tackles.
Fordham carried a 28-7 lead into the break and extended it with Bennett Henderson’s 19-yard field goal in the third quarter. William & Mary kept fighting when quarterback Winston Watkins hit Jacob Mullins for a 16-yard touchdown. Watkins completed 19 of 26 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Mullins’ only catch went for a score, and he also recorded a tackle. The Rams answered again when James powered in for a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged mostly to Fordham, but William & Mary produced an early highlight when Watkins connected with Kai Austin for a 27-yard touchdown. A two-point pass failed. Austin finished with six receptions for 81 yards and one score. Fordham then broke the game open with two more rushing touchdowns. Yohan-Li Louis sprinted 57 yards for a score, and James added a 10-yard touchdown run. Louis finished with 15 carries for 203 yards and one touchdown, plus one reception for 8 yards, a 14-yard kick return and a 10-yard punt return. James rushed 17 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
William & Mary added a late score when Patrick Blee plunged in from 1 yard out. Blee’s touchdown capped a drive that also featured contributions from Luke Vanantwerp and Khylil Johnson. Vanantwerp caught five passes for 80 yards, while Johnson had two receptions for 61 yards and three kick returns for 71 yards. Josh Miller carried nine times for 41 yards, caught one pass for 9 yards and returned one kick for 12 yards. Derrick Gurley and Sean McElwain each caught one pass for 5 yards. Tiu Afalava recorded six tackles and 0.5 sacks, Boogie Owens made six tackles, and AJ Revella finished with five. KJ Reed caught one pass for 18 yards and a score. Andrew Bond added two catches for 8 yards, and Alec Hughes had one reception for 4 yards. Taariq Denson carried four times for 20 yards and made one tackle. Crew Colon rushed once for 3 yards. Fordham’s team rushing totals included two carries for 2 yards. The Rams finished with a commanding offensive performance that overshadowed the Tribe’s passing success.

The Rams had been held to seven points or fewer in two of those defeats, making the offensive breakout especially significant. Fordham will host Stony Brook on Saturday, Sept. 26, while William & Mary will visit Duke on the same day. Fordham will then travel to Lehigh on Oct. 3, and William & Mary will host Holy Cross on Oct. 3. After facing Duke, William & Mary will travel to North Carolina Central on Oct. 10 before hosting Georgetown on Oct. 24 and Lafayette on Nov. 7.
