Villanova at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — Villanova visits Bucknell on Saturday in a matchup of two winless teams seeking their first victory.
Kickoff at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium is scheduled under a forecast of 79-degree heat and rain. Villanova (0-1) is coming off a 35-32 loss to William & Mary on Aug. 28. Bucknell (0-1) lost 35-14 at Richmond on Aug. 29.
Villanova quarterback Pat McQuaide is the Wildcats’ player to watch. In the opener, McQuaide completed 17 of 30 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, added 10 yards on three carries and averaged 18 yards on one punt. Ivan Murray Jr. contributed four tackles, and Nigel McSween added three.
Bucknell quarterback Christopher Dietrich is the key player for the Bison. Dietrich completed 16 of 30 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns against Richmond. Jason Morbitzer had two tackles, and Darius Day added one.
Both offenses will face pressure to keep pace if the rain affects ball security. Villanova’s defense allowed 35 points in its opener, while Bucknell’s offense managed only two touchdowns.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 25-22 Villanova victory, and Interstat’s ELO system gives Villanova a 94.4 percent probability to win. The betting market, however, lists Bucknell as a 26.5-point favorite. The over-under is 56.5.
Villanova will play at Louisville next Friday, while Bucknell travels to Virginia Military Institute on Sept. 12. Saturday’s game gives one of these teams an early chance to stop a slide, with Villanova hoping McQuaide can continue his efficient start and Bucknell counting on Dietrich to build on his two-touchdown performance.
Expect special teams and field position to matter in rainy conditions. Both teams have shown they can move the ball through the air; the question is which defense can make the key stop late.
