Maine at Towson

KOTKA, Finland (Interstat) — The Maine Black Bears and Towson Tigers will open the 2026 college football season Thursday, Aug. 27, at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Kotka, Finland. Both teams bring 0-0 records into the game.

Maine’s most recent result was a 33-27 loss at New Hampshire on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025. Towson’s most recent result was a 35-31 home victory over Campbell on the same day. The two teams have not played yet in 2026 and will begin anew in an unusual setting.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 40-30 Towson victory. The Tigers are designated as the home team, even though the game is being played outside the United States. The stadium is named after Johnny Unitas, the Hall of Fame quarterback, which adds a historical touch to the opener.

Maine will face a demanding schedule in the weeks ahead. After the Finland trip, the Black Bears play at Appalachian State on Sept. 5, host Merrimack on Sept. 12, and visit Boston College on Sept. 19. Later road games include Elon, Rhode Island, and Albany. Home games include Sacred Heart, Bryant, Campbell, and New Hampshire.

Towson also has a difficult path. The Tigers travel to Navy on Sept. 5 and South Carolina on Sept. 12 before hosting Morgan State on Sept. 19. Towson’s other road games are at Delaware State, Monmouth, Campbell, Sacred Heart, and Rhode Island. Stony Brook and Hampton will visit Towson later this fall.

For Maine, the opener may come down to execution on offense and avoiding mistakes. For Towson, the Tigers will try to use their home-field designation to their advantage, even from thousands of miles away. The simulator’s projection suggests a high-scoring affair, with Towson expected to do just enough to pull away.

Because both teams are 0-0, the game will be an early indicator of where each program stands. A win in Finland would give either team immediate momentum. A loss would create questions, but the long schedule allows room for recovery.

The game is the first of 12 regular-season contests for both Maine and Towson. After Thursday, their attention will turn quickly to challenging Week 2 games. Maine heads to Appalachian State, while Towson heads to Navy.

No kickoff time has been announced, but the game is set for Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Kotka. For one team, the trip to Finland will end with a victory. For the other, the flight home will bring a 0-1 record and the need to regroup.
