Alabama’s Keelon Russell leads Crimson Tide past East Carolina
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — Keelon Russell passed for 256 yards and rushed for a touchdown as Alabama defeated East Carolina 48-10 on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium before an announced crowd of 100,077.
The Crimson Tide, playing their season opener, improved to 1-0. East Carolina dropped to 0-1 in the first game for both teams. Alabama’s defense set the tone early, forcing a punt on East Carolina’s first possession, and the offense soon put the first points on the board.
After a 28-yard kickoff return by Dijon Lee Jr. to open the game, Russell moved the Crimson Tide downfield with a mix of runs and short passes. A 23-yard scramble by Russell on third down put Alabama in East Carolina territory. Daniel Hill later converted a first down with a 10-yard run, and Conor Talty capped the drive with a 41-yard field goal. Alabama led 3-0.
East Carolina was unable to generate any rhythm offensively. Ashton Gray picked up 9 yards on a carry, but a false start and an errant pass led to a punt. Ryan Coleman-Williams brought the punt back to the Alabama 14, and the Crimson Tide quickly advanced into East Carolina territory. Russell completed a 31-yard pass to Derek Meadows, and EJ Crowell finished the possession with a 3-yard touchdown run. Alabama led 10-0 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was where the game turned decisively in Alabama’s favor. Hill scored on a 4-yard run early in the quarter, giving the Crimson Tide a 17-point cushion. East Carolina answered with its best offensive play of the afternoon. Quarterback Mitch Griffis connected with Tyler Johnson down the right sideline for a 68-yard gain to the Alabama 1, and two plays later Griffis threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Melvin. That cut the deficit to 17-7.
But Alabama responded immediately. Russell hit Ryan Coleman-Williams for a 58-yard pass and then found Crowell for a 13-yard gain. Hill, who was effective between the tackles all day, plunged in from 2 yards out for his second touchdown of the period. Alabama led 24-7. On East Carolina’s next possession, Griffis tried to force a pass into coverage and Yhonzae Pierre stepped in front of it. Pierre returned the interception 27 yards for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 31-7.
Alabama kept pressing before halftime. Coleman-Williams caught passes for 12 and 16 yards, and the Crimson Tide moved to the East Carolina 15. A short completion to Kaleb Edwards and a scramble by Russell set up Russell’s 3-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds remaining in the half. Alabama went to the locker room with a 38-7 lead.
The Crimson Tide’s scoring flurry in the second quarter, 28 points, was the largest swing of the game. Alabama scored on four consecutive possessions spanning the first and second quarters, and the interception return by Pierre effectively ended any hope of an East Carolina comeback.
East Carolina showed some fight early in the third quarter. Linebacker Kieran Davis recovered a fumble by Coleman-Williams after a negative run by Russell, giving the Pirates possession at the Alabama 31. The Pirates moved to the 17, thanks to a 7-yard run by Michael Allen and a 4-yard completion to Ismael Smith Flores. But the Alabama defense held firm, and Noah Perez connected on a 34-yard field goal to make the score 38-10.
Alabama’s defense continued to control the game. Torin Brazell, a defensive end for East Carolina, recorded a sack of Russell in the second quarter, but the Crimson Tide pass rush was more consistent. Terrance Green sacked Griffis in the second quarter, Pierre added a sack in the third quarter, and Fatutoa Henry sacked backup quarterback Emory Williams in the fourth quarter. Alabama also forced a fumble and recovered by East Carolina’s Kieran Davis, but the Pirates could not turn it into enough points to make the game competitive.
The fourth quarter saw Alabama add the final points. Trae’shawn Brown scored on a 2-yard run, and Talty added a 21-yard field goal. The Crimson Tide’s backups played the closing moments, with quarterback Austin Mack completing a pass to Danny Lewis and running for 6 yards. Khalifa Keith carried three times for 12 yards in the fourth quarter.
Russell finished the game 18 of 30 for 256 yards and also ran 13 times for 86 yards. His top target was Coleman-Williams, who caught five passes for 130 yards, gained 9 yards on one carry and returned three punts for 27 yards. Derek Meadows had three catches for 44 yards, Lotzeir Brooks caught two passes for 23 yards, Kaleb Edwards had two receptions for 21 yards, and Rico Scott made two catches for 21 yards. Hill ran for 47 yards on nine carries and scored twice, while Crowell rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and added a 13-yard catch. Brown contributed 15 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Pierre was the standout on defense for Alabama, recording a tackle, a sack and the interception return for a touchdown. Green and Henry each had a sack. Alex Asparuhov punted twice for 104 yards.
Griffis finished 10 of 16 for 137 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Emory Williams came on in the fourth quarter and completed 1 of 3 passes for 23 yards. Jeremiah Melvin led East Carolina receivers with four catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Johnson’s one catch went for 68 yards, and Ray Ray Joseph Jr. caught three passes for 23 yards. Ashton Gray had six carries for 17 yards, Michael Allen ran six times for 15 yards, and TJ Engleman Jr. had one carry for minus 2 yards. Tomas O’Halloran punted eight times for 377 yards.
Alabama’s scoring was distributed across three quarters, while East Carolina’s only touchdowns came in the second quarter on the short pass to Melvin. The game served as a strong opening statement for the Crimson Tide, who will travel to Kentucky next Saturday. East Carolina will host Appalachian State next Saturday.
The Interstat game simulator projected Alabama to win 38-17, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Alabama a 97.70 percent probability of victory. East Carolina was listed at plus 27.5 on the point spread, and the combined total of 58 points went under the 52.5 over-under line.
