Hawaii Routs Wyoming Behind Alejado’s 2 Touchdowns
HONOLULU (Interstat) — The Hawaii Warriors used a dominant defensive performance and an explosive passing attack to defeat the Wyoming Cowboys 27 to 7 on Saturday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
The Warriors improved their season record to eight wins and four losses, while the Cowboys fell to four wins and eight losses.
Wyoming struck first in stunning fashion on the game’s opening possession. On Hawaii’s first offensive play from scrimmage, quarterback Micah Alejado’s pass was intercepted by Wyoming’s J. Thomas, who returned it 50 yards for a touchdown just 62 seconds into the contest.
Hawaii responded with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive on its next possession. Alejado capped the series with a 19-yard touchdown pass to C. Barfield, tying the game at seven apiece with 3:52 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Warriors took control of the game in the second quarter. Kicker Kansei Matsuzawa connected on a 47-yard field goal to give Hawaii its first lead at 10 to 7. Later in the quarter, Alejado found receiver Jackson Harris for a 78-yard touchdown strike, extending the advantage to 17 to 7. The connection was a highlight of the night for Harris, who finished with four receptions for 153 yards.
Hawaii added another Matsuzawa field goal from 47 yards as time expired in the first half to take a 20 to 7 lead into the break.
The Warriors put the game out of reach on their first drive of the third quarter. Barfield broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run, his second score of the game, to push the Hawaii lead to 27 to 7.
Wyoming’s offense, which showed brief flashes, was unable to mount a sustained comeback. Quarterback Mason Drube, who split time with Kaden Anderson, completed 17 of 32 passes for 179 yards but was sacked multiple times and consistently harassed by the Hawaii defense. Drube also led the Cowboys in rushing with 23 yards on 11 carries.
The Warriors’ defense was the story of the game, holding Wyoming to just seven points and generating constant pressure. Defensive back Peter Manuma led all tacklers with 11, while Wynden Ho’ohuli and Lesterlaisene Lagafuaina each added five. The unit also recorded multiple sacks and an interception by Jaheim Wilson-Jones in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Alejado finished an efficient night, completing 17 of 24 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. His favorite target was Pofele Ashlock, who caught four passes for 71 yards.
The Cowboys were unable to capitalize on several second-half drives, with their final opportunity ending on a turnover on downs in the closing minutes. Hawaii then ran out the clock to secure the 20-point victory.
The game’s final score fell under the projected over/under line of 44.5 points.
