Merrimack Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Stun Fordham
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Interstat) — In a stunning fourth-quarter collapse, the Fordham Rams surrendered a 13-point lead in the final period, falling 27-26 to the Merrimack Warriors on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Duane Stadium.
The loss encapsulated a frustrating season for Fordham, which dropped to 1-11, while Merrimack improved to 4-7, securing the comeback victory in front of their home crowd.
For three quarters, the game belonged to Fordham and its dynamic quarterback, Gunnar Smith. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior from Lake Mary, Florida, was a dual-threat force, amassing 252 yards through the air on 17-of-31 passing and adding a game-high 86 rushing yards on 13 carries. He accounted for two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.
Smith’s favorite target was Troy Worrell, who torched the Merrimack secondary for 160 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. The Rams’ ground game was also potent, with Yohan-Li Louis of West Palm Beach, Florida, grinding out 91 yards on 22 carries and catching four passes for 33 yards.
Fordham established control early. After a blocked punt by K. Pothel resulted in a safety for the game’s first points, the Rams capitalized with a 26-yard field goal from Bennett Henderson to take a 5-0 lead. Merrimack answered with a 27-yard field goal from Carlton Thai, making it 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Fordham extend its lead. Smith engineered a methodical 98-yard drive, capped by his own 1-yard touchdown plunge. The extra point gave the Rams a 12-3 advantage. The momentum, however, shifted dramatically just minutes later. A punt by Fordham’s Matty Weir was blocked by Merrimack’s Matthias Latham and recovered by Garry Rosemond Jr., who returned it 11 yards for a touchdown. The special teams score brought the Warriors back within two points at 12-10.
Undeterred, Smith led a rapid response, culminating in a 26-yard touchdown scramble with 1:48 left in the half to push the lead back to nine. Merrimack managed a late drive, ending in another Thai field goal as time expired in the half, sending the teams to the locker room with Fordham leading 19-13.
The Rams seemed to solidify their command in the third quarter. Smith connected with Worrell on a deep 73-yard touchdown pass, stretching the lead to 26-13. The Fordham defense continued to stifle the Warriors’ offense for the remainder of the period, setting the stage for what appeared to be a comfortable victory.
The fourth quarter, however, told a different story entirely. Merrimack quarterback Ayden Pereira, who had struggled for much of the afternoon, caught fire. The Auburn, New Hampshire, native, who finished 11-of-30 for 167 yards and added 77 rushing yards, ignited the comeback with a single explosive play. He found Austin Palmer deep for a 66-yard touchdown strike, suddenly cutting the deficit to 26-20.
On Fordham’s ensuing possession, the Rams’ hopes were dashed when Smith’s pass was intercepted by Merrimack linebacker Will Claude of Framingham, Massachusetts. The Warriors’ offense, now brimming with confidence, marched down the field. The drive was kept alive by Pereira’s legs and a key pass interference penalty. It culminated in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Pereira to tight end Cade Callahan of Townsend, Massachusetts, with just under three minutes remaining. Thai’s crucial extra point gave Merrimack its first lead of the day at 27-26.
Fordham had one final chance to salvage the game. Smith moved the Rams into Merrimack territory, but a critical sack pushed them back, and the drive ultimately stalled. Merrimack took over and, behind Pereira’s decisive running, successfully ran out the clock to seal the improbable win.
The victory was a testament to Merrimack’s resilience and its defense, which produced two critical interceptions, the other by Nate Palanica Jr. of Northampton, Pennsylvania. The loss marked another heartbreak for Fordham in a season full of them, as a dominant performance for 45 minutes was undone by a disastrous final 15.
