Colgate rolls past Bucknell behind Osborne’s 3 touchdowns

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Colgate quarterback Zach Osborne threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and running back Marco Maldonado rushed for 120 yards and a score to power the Raiders to a 38-19 victory over Bucknell on a cold Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.

The Raiders seized control early, scoring on their first two possessions and never looking back to close the season for both teams with identical 5-7 records.

Colgate’s offense exploded in the first quarter, putting 14 points on the board before the Bison could respond. The opening drive was a statement, capped by a 67-yard touchdown strike from Osborne to receiver Reed Swanson just 50 seconds into the game. Osborne later connected with Matt Fogler on a 37-yard scoring pass midway through the quarter to establish a commanding lead.

Bucknell’s offense, struggling to find consistency, finally put together a sustained drive in the second quarter. The Bison orchestrated a 17-play, 75-yard march that consumed nearly ten minutes of clock, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Nicholas Penuvchev to Josh Gary. The score cut the Colgate lead to 14-7.

The Raiders, however, answered emphatically. Osborne engineered a quick 75-yard drive, finishing it with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Fogler with 1:53 remaining in the half. After a Bucknell interception by Colgate’s Dane Picariello gave the Raiders the ball back in Bison territory, they added a 33-yard field goal from Luke Vogeler as time expired in the half to take a 24-7 lead into the break.

Any hope of a Bucknell comeback was quickly extinguished in the third quarter. Penuvchev was intercepted on the Bison’s first play from scrimmage by Colgate’s Tymir Wynn, setting the Raiders up at the Bucknell 26. Four plays later, Osborne powered in from one yard out to extend the Colgate advantage to 31-7.

Bucknell showed resilience in the fourth quarter, with versatile player Sam Milligan taking over at quarterback. Milligan, who also rushed, received, and threw passes in the game, capped a drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion kept the score at 31-13.

Colgate put the game out of reach on its next meaningful possession. Maldonado broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run with 3:15 left, his 16th carry of the day pushing him over the 100-yard mark and sealing the victory for the Raiders.

Bucknell added a late touchdown on a 28-yard run by Michael Cadden with 1:19 remaining for the final margin.

Osborne finished his day 13 of 25 for 244 yards through the air, adding 58 yards on 14 carries on the ground. His primary targets were Swanson, who hauled in six catches for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Fogler, who caught four passes for 87 yards and two scores.

For Bucknell, the offense was a struggle for much of the day. Penuvchev completed 5 of 12 passes for 39 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions before being relieved. The Bison ground game was led by Logan Bush with 50 yards on 14 carries, while Cadden contributed 57 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts. TJ Cadden was a bright spot in the return game, amassing 118 yards on four kickoff returns.

The game’s final score was close to the projection by Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 33-19 Colgate victory. The Raiders also entered the contest with a 70.80 percent probability to win according to the same service’s ELO system. Despite Bucknell being a 9.5-point pregame underdog, Colgate covered the spread with the 19-point victory. The total of 57 points fell under the over/under line of 59.5.
