UCF rallies to beat Oklahoma State on late field goal

ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stunning second-half collapse, the Oklahoma State Cowboys saw a commanding lead evaporate as the UCF Knights scored 17 unanswered points to secure a 17-14 victory on Saturday at FBC Mortgage Stadium.

The Cowboys, who fell to 1-10 on the season, dominated the first half, controlling the clock and the scoreboard while keeping the Knights’ offense in check. UCF, improving to 5-6, was lifeless for two quarters before a dramatic turnaround fueled by big plays and a stifling defensive effort after halftime.

Oklahoma State established its ground game early, marching 80 yards on 14 plays on its opening possession. The drive, which consumed nearly seven minutes, was capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zane Flores to receiver Gavin Freeman. Flores, who finished 13 of 28 for 124 yards with one touchdown and one interception, also rushed for a score.

The Cowboys doubled their lead just before the half. A 12-play, 77-yard drive was finished by Flores himself, who scrambled for a 6-yard touchdown with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Running back Rodney Fields Jr. was the workhorse for Oklahoma State, grinding out 87 yards on 19 carries to help the visitors build their 14-0 lead.

UCF’s offense, led by quarterback Tayven Jackson, was stymied for the entire first half. Jackson threw two interceptions before the break, with Oklahoma State defensive backs Cam Smith and LaDainian Fields each coming down with a pick.

The momentum shifted instantly after halftime. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Jackson connected with tight end Dylan Wade on a deep route for an 83-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-7 and energizing the home crowd.

Jackson, from Greenwood, Indiana, finished 16 of 25 for 271 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, with the long score to Wade serving as the catalyst for the comeback. Wade was his primary weapon, hauling in four catches for a massive 145 yards and both of UCF’s touchdowns.

From that point forward, the Oklahoma State offense sputtered. The Cowboys managed just 48 total yards in the second half as the UCF defensive front took over. The Knights recorded three sacks, with Isaiah Nixon, Malik Charles, and Jeffson Lafontant all getting to the quarterback, and consistently pressured Flores into errant throws.

UCF’s defense was led by linebacker Lewis Carter, who registered a game-high six tackles. The unit forced five Oklahoma State punts in the second half.

The Knights finally drew even early in the fourth quarter. A methodical 13-play, 55-yard drive culminated in Jackson’s second touchdown pass to Wade, a 2-yard connection that tied the game at 14-14 with 9:12 left on the clock.

After forcing another Oklahoma State punt, UCF drove into field goal range. The key play was a 50-yard completion from Jackson to Wade, setting the Knights up in Cowboys territory. The drive eventually stalled, but kicker Noe Ruelas, from West Hartford, Connecticut, drilled a 34-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining to give UCF its first lead of the game at 17-14.

Oklahoma State had one final chance. On the ensuing possession, Flores’ second pass was intercepted by UCF defensive back Braeden Marshall, who returned it 35 yards to the Oklahoma State 10-yard line. The Knights then took a knee twice to run out the clock and seal the victory.

The loss extends a difficult season for Oklahoma State, which has now lost ten consecutive games since a season-opening win. UCF, meanwhile, keeps its bowl eligibility hopes alive heading into its regular-season finale next week. The Knights travel to face BYU, while Oklahoma State returns home to host Iowa State.
