Manning Leads Texas to High-Scoring Victory Over Arkansas
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase before a crowd of 102,361 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the Texas Longhorns outgunned the Arkansas Razorbacks 52 to 37 in a game that saw momentum swing wildly before the home team pulled away in the second half.
The victory improved Texas’s season record to eight wins and three losses, while Arkansas’s difficult season continued, dropping them to two wins and nine losses. The final score defied pregame expectations, as the total of 89 points sailed far over the projected over/under line of 57.5.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with Arkansas striking first on a 51-yard field goal from S. Starzyk on their opening drive. The Razorbacks extended their early lead to six points with another Starzyk field goal, this time from 33 yards, capping a methodical drive that saw quarterback Taylen Green connect with J. Platt for a 30-yard gain.
Texas, however, quickly demonstrated its explosive capability. Quarterback Arch Manning, the redshirt sophomore from New Orleans, needed just five plays to answer, finding DeAndre Moore Jr. on a 46-yard touchdown strike down the middle to put the Longhorns on the board. After forcing an Arkansas punt, the Longhorns engineered a 15-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a trick play, with Manning catching a 4-yard touchdown pass from P. Livingstone to give Texas a 14-6 lead late in the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Razorbacks’ ground game. Arkansas running back M. Washington broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run early in the period, and later, quarterback Taylen Green capped another sustained drive with a 4-yard scoring run of his own. Those two touchdowns gave Arkansas a surprising 20-14 lead.
Manning and the Longhorns responded with precision. Manning connected with Livingstone again, this time for a 54-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead. As the first half wound down, Texas drove into field goal range, allowing Mason Shipley to drill a 44-yard kick as time expired, sending the Longhorns into the locker room with a 24-20 advantage.
Any hopes of an Arkansas upset were extinguished in a dominant third-quarter performance by Texas. The Longhorns scored 21 unanswered points, turning a tight contest into a commanding lead. Manning started the onslaught with a 3-yard touchdown run, then found Moore Jr. for an 8-yard score after a Jelani McDonald interception gave Texas a short field. Manning’s fourth touchdown pass of the game came just before the quarter ended, a 20-yard connection with Moore Jr. to complete the receiver’s hat trick and push the lead to 45-20.
Arkansas managed only a 33-yard Starzyk field goal in the third quarter, their lone response to the Texas barrage.
The Razorbacks showed resilience in the fourth quarter after a switch at quarterback to KJ Jackson. Jackson engineered two late scoring drives, the first ending with his own 12-yard touchdown run and the second culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Platt with 16 seconds remaining. However, the comeback attempt was far too late, as Texas had already built an insurmountable lead, adding a final touchdown in the fourth quarter to reach 52 points.
Statistically, the game was a showcase for Arch Manning, who finished 18 of 30 for 389 yards and four touchdowns through the air, adding another score on the ground. His favorite targets were Ryan Wingo, who had six catches for 81 yards, and Emmett Mosley V, who added four receptions for 81 yards. DeAndre Moore Jr.’s three touchdown catches on just four receptions for 74 yards were a defining feature of the Texas attack.
For Arkansas, the quarterback duo of Taylen Green and KJ Jackson combined for 324 passing yards and two touchdowns. Green was also a threat on the ground, rushing for 56 yards and a score. Receiver Raylen Sharpe was a consistent presence, hauling in four passes for 65 yards.
Defensively, Texas was led by Michael Taaffe with seven tackles, while Ethan Burke and Colin Simmons provided consistent pressure from the defensive line. For Arkansas, linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr. recorded a game-high seven tackles.
The Longhorns will look to carry this offensive momentum into their regular-season finale against Texas A&M next Friday. Arkansas returns home to face Missouri next Saturday, hoping to end their season on a positive note.
