William & Mary Routs Hampton in Lopsided Road Victory

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, William & Mary delivered a dominant performance, routing Hampton 55 to 14 in a nonconference football game Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.

The Tribe, installed as a 20.5-point underdog by oddsmakers, flipped the script entirely, amassing 55 points against a Hampton team that statistical models had projected to win by a touchdown. The victory improved William & Mary’s record to 7-4, while the Pirates fell to 2-9.

The game was decided in a whirlwind first quarter that saw both teams trade blows before William & Mary seized control with a devastating one-two punch in the final 12 seconds. After Hampton running back Gracen Goldsmith scored his second touchdown of the opening period on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 14 with 1:38 remaining, the Tribe responded instantly.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, William & Mary running back Rashad Raymond broke through the line and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown, just 11 seconds after Hampton had scored. The quick-strike touchdown gave the Tribe a 21-14 lead and shifted the game’s momentum permanently.

The ensuing kickoff led to a catastrophic sequence for the Pirates. After a three-and-out drive, Hampton was forced to punt from its own 26-yard line. William & Mary linebacker Stephon Hicks broke through the line, blocked Brett Starling’s punt, recovered the loose ball at the 2-yard line, and waltzed into the end zone for another Tribe touchdown.

In a span of just 12 seconds of game clock, William & Mary had turned a tied game into a 28-14 lead, a deficit from which Hampton never recovered.

The Tribe’s offensive explosion was led by quarterback Tyler Hughes. The junior from Marietta, Georgia, was ruthlessly efficient, completing 17 of 20 passes for 207 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 52 yards on five rushing attempts. His favorite target was Deven Thompson, who caught two passes for 73 yards, both going for touchdowns.

Hughes spread the wealth in the passing game, connecting with Trey McDonald, Haven Mullins, and Tariq Sims for additional scores. On the ground, Raymond was the workhorse, rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, providing a consistent offensive threat throughout the afternoon.

Defensively, the Tribe stifled the Hampton attack after the first quarter. The Pirates’ early success, driven by Goldsmith’s two scoring runs, was halted as William & Mary’s defense tightened. Cornerback Jalen Jones intercepted a pass from Hampton quarterback Braden Davis, and the Tribe defense recorded multiple sacks, consistently pressuring the Pirates’ backfield.

Hampton’s offense struggled to find a rhythm after its initial two scoring drives. Davis finished 11 of 18 for 117 yards with one interception before being relieved by Earl Woods III. Goldsmith was a bright spot for the Pirates, rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

The second quarter was all William & Mary, as the Tribe outscored Hampton 24 to 0. Hughes connected with Thompson on a 54-yard touchdown strike and found Sims for a 20-yard score. He capped the first-half scoring by leading a methodical drive that ended with a 36-yard field goal from Keegan Shackford as time expired, sending the Tribe into halftime with a commanding 45-14 lead.

Any hope of a Hampton comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. William & Mary took the opening kickoff and marched down the field, with Hughes throwing his fifth and final touchdown pass, a 3-yarder to Mullins. Later in the quarter, a Hughes pass to Thompson from 19 yards out extended the lead. Shackford added a 20-yard field goal to close the third-quarter scoring, making it 55-14.

With the game well in hand, both teams substituted liberally in the fourth quarter, which passed without any further scoring.

The lopsided victory provides significant momentum for William & Mary as it heads into its regular-season finale next Saturday at home against Richmond. Hampton will look to regroup on the road against Rhode Island. The total points scored, 69, went well over the pregame over/under line of 53.5.
