South Carolina State rallies to top North Carolina Central
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, South Carolina State quarterback William Atkins IV orchestrated a stunning 34-27 victory over North Carolina Central on Friday night at a rain-soaked O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who exploded for 17 points in the first quarter, saw a commanding lead evaporate before scoring 14 unanswered points in the final period to secure the win and improve their season record to 8-3. The Eagles, who dominated the second and third quarters, fell to 7-4 with the loss, which defied pregame projections that heavily favored the home team.
South Carolina State came out with explosive force. The Bulldogs took the opening drive and, despite some early pressure, marched downfield to set up a 50-yard field goal from kicker Nico Cavanillas Alti, giving them an early lead. After forcing a North Carolina Central punt, the Bulldogs’ offense found its rhythm. Atkins, the sophomore from Parkton, Maryland, capped a methodical drive with a perfectly placed 28-yard touchdown strike to Deyandre Ruffin, pushing the lead to 10-3.
The first-quarter fireworks were not over. On the ensuing kickoff, the Bulldogs executed a surprise onside kick, recovering at their own 49-yard line. On the very next play, Atkins went deep, connecting with Nigel Johnson for a 51-yard touchdown bomb. In a matter of seconds, a competitive game had become a 17-3 blowout in favor of the visitors as the quarter ended.
North Carolina Central, reeling from the sudden turn of events, began to claw its way back in the second quarter. A 31-yard field goal from Kaleb Robison cut into the deficit. The game’s momentum then shifted violently when South Carolina State’s Atkins, under pressure, threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted by Eagles defensive back Eric Adams, who returned it 33 yards for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd and cutting the lead to 17-13.
The Eagles’ defense, energized by the score, forced a quick three-and-out. The offense, now led by quarterback Walker Harris after an early appearance by Joshua Jones, took over. Harris, a redshirt freshman from Rolesville, North Carolina, methodically moved the Eagles down the field, largely on the back of running back Chris Mosley. The drive culminated in a 9-yard touchdown run by Mosley, giving North Carolina Central its first lead of the night at 20-17, a stunning reversal after their early struggles.
South Carolina State managed to stop the bleeding before halftime, but the Eagles carried all the momentum into the break.
That momentum continued into the third quarter. After the Bulldogs could only muster a 28-yard field goal from Alti to tie the game at 20-20, the Eagles responded immediately. Harris engineered a sharp drive, finishing it with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Mekhi Wall, putting North Carolina Central back in front 27-20.
The Bulldogs’ offense, which had been stymied since the first quarter, finally reignited in the fourth. Atkins led a decisive 75-yard drive, methodically picking apart the Eagles’ secondary. He tied the game with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Smith, who was his most reliable target throughout the night, finishing with seven receptions for 72 yards.
With the game knotted at 27-27 and the clock ticking down, South Carolina State turned to its ground game. Josh Shaw, a dynamic athlete, took over, ripping off large chunks of yardage. The drive was sustained by a key pass interference penalty against North Carolina Central in the end zone. After several attempts from the 1-yard line were stuffed by a valiant Eagles goal-line stand, it was Shaw who finally punched it in from 30 yards out on a gutsy call, giving the Bulldogs a 34-27 lead with just 1:51 remaining.
North Carolina Central had one final chance. Harris moved the Eagles to near midfield, but the Bulldogs’ defense stiffened, forcing four consecutive incomplete passes to seal the victory on a turnover on downs.
Atkins finished with a stellar stat line, completing 24 of 36 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns, overcoming several sacks to lead his team to the comeback win. His favorite target was Smith, but the ball was spread around to Johnson, Ruffin, and Jalen Johnson, who also contributed 71 return yards.
For North Carolina Central, Harris threw for 218 yards and a touchdown in relief, while Mosley was a workhorse, rushing 21 times for 105 yards and a score. Wall was a standout receiver with five catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.
The win keeps South Carolina State in contention near the top of the conference standings as they prepare to visit Delaware State on Nov. 22. North Carolina Central will look to rebound on the same day when they travel to face Morgan State.
