Utah at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — In a stunning offensive display that defied pregame projections, the Utah Utes routed the Baylor Bears 55 to 28 on Saturday before 38,186 fans at McLane Stadium.
The Utes, who were installed as 9.5-point underdogs, dominated from the opening kickoff, building a commanding lead that the Bears’ prolific passing attack could never overcome. The game’s total points, 83, sailed far over the over/under line of 59.5.
Utah set the tone immediately, capitalizing on a Baylor mistake to take a two-score lead in the first quarter. After an early exchange of punts, the Utes engineered a 91-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 25-yard scoring pass from quarterback Devon Dampier to tight end Dallen Bentley.
On Baylor’s ensuing possession, the game took a decisive turn. Bears quarterback Sawyer Robertson’s pass was intercepted by Utah cornerback Elijah Davis at the Utes’ 35-yard line. Davis returned the interception 65 yards for a touchdown, giving Utah a 14 to 0 lead before the first quarter had concluded.
Baylor found its footing in the second quarter, with Robertson connecting with Josh Cameron on a 1-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit. The Utes responded instantly, however, as backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game.
After a Baylor field goal, Utah running back Wayshawn Parker ripped off a 64-yard touchdown run to extend the Utes’ lead. Baylor managed a late first-half score on another Robertson-to-Cameron connection, a 29-yard touchdown with four seconds remaining, to make the score 28 to 17 at halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams trade field position before Baylor’s Connor Hawkins connected on a 31-yard field goal. Utah answered with another explosive play, as Ficklin raced 74 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the day, pushing the lead to 35 to 20.
Utah put the game completely out of reach with a 20-point fourth quarter. Running back NaQuari Rogers scored on a 3-yard run, and Dampier later found Parker for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Rogers added a final 1-yard touchdown run late in the period, though the point-after attempt was blocked.
Baylor’s final points came on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Robertson to Kole Wilson, followed by a successful two-point conversion.
The Utes’ offense was a model of efficiency and explosiveness, amassing huge yardage on the ground without relying on a heavy passing attack. Ficklin was the standout, rushing for 166 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Parker added 129 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushes, also catching a touchdown pass.
For Baylor, Robertson put up massive numbers in a losing effort, completing 29 of 58 passes for 430 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions proved costly. Cameron was his primary target, hauling in 13 receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Ashtyn Hawkins added seven catches for 119 yards, and Bryson Washington led the Bears’ ground game with 97 yards on 14 attempts.
Defensively, Baylor’s Devyn Bobby recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while Utah’s Kash Dillon and Lander Barton each recorded a sack.
With the victory, Utah improved its season record to 8-2, while Baylor fell to 5-5. The Utes will host Kansas State next Saturday, while Baylor travels to face Arizona.
