Wisconsin at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Interstat) — In a commanding display that solidified its perfect season, the Indiana Hoosiers dominated the Wisconsin Badgers 31-7 on Saturday before a crowd of 55,042 at Memorial Stadium.

The victory improved Indiana’s record to 11 wins and 0 losses, while Wisconsin fell to 3 wins and 7 losses. The outcome defied pregame projections, as Wisconsin had been installed as a 29.5-point favorite, and the total score of 38 points fell under the over/under line of 43.5.

Indiana’s offense was orchestrated with surgical precision by quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The Miami, Florida, native was nearly flawless, completing 22 of 24 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns. His performance was the engine of an Indiana attack that methodically pulled away after a competitive start.

The Hoosiers struck first late in the opening quarter. Mendoza connected with wide receiver Charlie Becker on a 31-yard deep pass for a touchdown, capping a 10-play, 79-yard drive to tie the game. Becker, from Nashville, Tennessee, was Mendoza’s primary deep threat, finishing with five receptions for 108 yards and that score.

Wisconsin answered in the second quarter to briefly regain the lead. Badgers quarterback Carter Smith, from Fort Myers, Florida, found wide receiver Leon Mason for a 45-yard touchdown pass. That would be the high point for the Badgers, as their offense struggled to sustain drives for the remainder of the contest.

Indiana reclaimed the lead before halftime. After a drive stalled deep in Wisconsin territory, kicker Nico Radicic drilled a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, sending the Hoosiers into the locker room with a 10-7 advantage.

Any hope of a Wisconsin comeback was extinguished in a decisive third quarter. The Hoosiers scored 14 points to break the game open. Mendoza first led a methodical 75-yard drive, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Holden Staes of Atlanta, Georgia.

The turning point came on Wisconsin’s ensuing possession. Smith was stripped of the ball on a sack by Indiana’s Stephen Daley, and the fumble was recovered by Hoosiers offensive lineman Hosea Wheeler at the Wisconsin 21-yard line. On the very next play, Mendoza hit fullback Riley Nowakowski, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, for a 21-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 24-7.

Indiana added a final exclamation point in the fourth quarter. Mendoza engineered another long drive, finishing it with a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. of Indianapolis, sealing the 31-7 victory.

The Hoosiers’ defense was relentless, sacking Smith four times and limiting the Badgers’ offense. Linebacker Aiden Fisher of Fredericksburg, Virginia, led the team with seven tackles, while linebacker Rolijah Hardy of Lakeland, Florida, added six tackles and a sack. The secondary also contributed, with cornerback Devan Boykin of Greensboro, North Carolina, securing a fourth-quarter interception.

For Wisconsin, linebacker Mason Posa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a bright spot on defense, recording a game-high 12 tackles and a sack. The Badgers’ offense, however, could not find a rhythm beyond their one second-quarter scoring drive. Smith finished 9 of 15 for 98 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also being held to just five net rushing yards.

The Hoosiers will look to complete an undefeated regular season when they travel to face in-state rival Purdue on Friday, Nov. 28. Wisconsin will return home to host Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 22.
