Mercyhurst Edges Saint Francis (PA) on Late Touchdown in Defensive Struggle

LORETTO, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by late-game chaos and a stunning reversal of fortune, the Mercyhurst Lakers escaped DeGol Field with a 16-15 victory over the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash on Saturday, denying the home team its first win of the season in the most heartbreaking fashion.

The Red Flash, who entered the game 0-8, appeared to have secured a dramatic comeback win, taking their first lead of the game with just over a minute remaining. But Mercyhurst quarterback Adam Urena engineered a frantic final drive, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Evans with 20 seconds left to reclaim the lead. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, but it ultimately did not matter as the Lakers’ defense held on for the one-point win.

The victory improved Mercyhurst to 4-6 on the season, while Saint Francis (PA) fell to 0-9. The result defied the pregame expectations, as the Red Flash had been installed as 9.5-point favorites, and the total score of 31 points fell well under the over/under line of 43.5.

The game was a defensive struggle for the first three quarters, dominated by field position and field goals. Saint Francis (PA) struck first with a 28-yard field goal from Mac Plummer on their opening drive, capping a 12-play, 62-yard march. The Red Flash added two more Plummer field goals in the second quarter, from 34 and 26 yards, to take a 9-0 lead into halftime. The Mercyhurst offense, led by Urena, struggled to find its rhythm against a spirited Red Flash defense.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. The Lakers finally got on the board with a 35-yard field goal from Max Young. Then, the ground game took over. Running back Brian Trobel, who finished with 93 yards on 11 carries, broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter. Young’s extra point gave Mercyhurst its first lead of the day at 10-9.

The fourth quarter became a tense battle of wills. The Red Flash, led by quarterback Nick Whitfield Jr., mounted a sustained drive deep into Mercyhurst territory. The drive stalled, but Plummer connected on a 20-yard field goal with 1:50 left to put Saint Francis (PA) back in front, 12-10.

Disaster then struck for the Lakers. On the ensuing possession, Urena hit Evans on a short pass, but Evans fumbled after a 7-yard gain. Saint Francis (PA) defensive back Colin Douglas scooped up the loose ball and returned it 45 yards to the Mercyhurst 7-yard line. After a series of runs and timeouts, Plummer booted his fifth field goal of the game, a 25-yarder with 1:07 on the clock, seemingly icing the game for the Red Flash with a 15-10 advantage.

Urena and the Lakers had other plans. Starting from their own 35-yard line with no timeouts and just over a minute left, Urena was masterful. He methodically moved the offense downfield, primarily targeting Evans and Rylan Davison. The drive was kept alive by a crucial 15-yard completion to Evans that moved the ball to the Saint Francis (PA) 30. After a penalty pushed them back, Urena found Evans once more on a 15-yard scoring strike to send the Lakers’ sideline into a frenzy.

Urena, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound quarterback from Chino Hills, California, finished the game with efficient numbers, completing 22 of 32 passes for 234 yards and the game-winning touchdown. His favorite target was Evans, who had a monster performance with 9 receptions for 138 yards and the decisive score. Trobel provided the balance on the ground with his 93 rushing yards.

For Saint Francis (PA), the loss was a crushing blow in a season full of them. Whitfield Jr., a 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback from Fredonia, New York, was active, completing 21 of 36 passes for 193 yards and adding 37 yards on the ground. The Red Flash running game was led by Josiah Bryson, who had 38 yards on 10 carries, and Jordan Theodore, who added 29 yards on 14 attempts. Jahmil Perryman was a versatile weapon, catching three passes for 56 yards and adding 14 rushing yards. Plummer’s five field goals, however, were not enough to overcome the lone touchdown surrendered in the final seconds.

The Lakers will look to build on the dramatic win when they host Robert Morris next Saturday. The Red Flash, still in search of their first victory, will welcome Long Island University to Loretto next Saturday.
