Harvard Stays Unbeaten, Rolls Past Columbia

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a game that was effectively decided by halftime, the Harvard Crimson remained undefeated with a commanding 31-14 victory over the Columbia Lions on Friday night at a chilly Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.

The Crimson, now 8-0 overall, used a dominant first-half performance to build an insurmountable lead, scoring on their first four possessions and capitalizing on a pair of costly Columbia turnovers. The Lions, who fell to 1-7, did not find the scoreboard until the final quarter.

Harvard quarterback Jaden Craig, a Montclair, New Jersey native, orchestrated the efficient offensive attack. He completed 16 of 24 passes for 213 yards and connected on two touchdown throws, both to tight end Seamus Gilmartin. Craig also added 14 yards on the ground.

The Crimson’s offensive engine, however, was Xaviah Bascon. The versatile athlete gashed the Columbia defense for 94 rushing yards on 18 carries, finding the end zone twice. He also caught a 15-yard pass, providing a multifaceted threat that the Lions struggled to contain throughout the evening.

The game began with a promising but ultimately fruitless 15-play drive from Columbia. The Lions marched from their own 25-yard line to the Harvard 10, but the drive stalled, and a 28-yard field goal attempt by Hugo Merry sailed wide right.

Harvard responded immediately, embarking on a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. The series was capped by Bascon’s 1-yard plunge into the end zone with 2:11 remaining in the opening quarter.

The second quarter belonged entirely to the Crimson, who erupted for 21 points. The momentum shifted decisively after Columbia quarterback Chase Goodwin was intercepted by Harvard linebacker Sean Line at the Crimson 10-yard line. Line returned the pick 12 yards, setting up Harvard with strong field position.

Just three plays later, Craig found Gilmartin for a 2-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 14-0.

On Columbia’s ensuing possession, the Lions’ hopes were further dashed when Goodwin was picked off again, this time by defensive back Jack Donahoe. Donahoe returned the interception 24 yards to the Columbia 2-yard line. On the next play, Craig again connected with Gilmartin, this time for a 3-yard score, pushing the Harvard advantage to 21-0.

The Crimson closed the half with a masterful two-minute drill. Starting from their own 36-yard line with 2:51 on the clock, Harvard efficiently moved down the field. A 58-yard deep pass from Craig to receiver Caydon Coffman was the key play, placing the ball at the Columbia 10. After a series of runs by DJ Gordon and Bascon, the latter powered in for his second touchdown from a yard out with just 11 seconds left, sending Harvard into the locker room with a 28-0 lead.

The third quarter saw the Crimson add to their total with a 22-yard field goal from kicker Kieran Corr, making it 31-0. The drive was kept alive by a 34-yard completion from Craig to receiver Cam Henry, who finished with five catches for 68 yards.

Columbia’s offense, which had been stymied for three quarters, finally broke through in the fourth. Goodwin, a Houston native, led two scoring drives, both culminating in touchdown passes to receiver Titus Evans. The first was a 15-yard connection with 13:19 remaining, and the second was a 6-yard score with 1:49 left on the clock. Goodwin finished 20 of 38 for 205 yards with the two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Evans caught five passes for 41 yards and the two scores. Tight end Braden Dougherty was a reliable target for Columbia, making four receptions for 39 yards. Running back Michael Walters led the Lions’ ground game with 47 yards on 12 carries.

The Lions attempted an onside kick after their final touchdown, but Harvard recovered and was able to run out the clock, sealing the 31-14 final.

The victory keeps Harvard’s perfect season intact as they continue their pursuit of an Ivy League title. They will host Penn next Saturday. Columbia, still searching for its first conference win, will return home to face Brown next Saturday.

The final score defied the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a closer final score of Harvard 26, Columbia 18, and the Crimson’s 31 points helped the total score go over the over/under line of 48.5. Despite the lopsided result, Columbia had been installed as a 28-point pregame underdog.
